GH5 Movcam Cage for the GH5

Nice review Erik, I like mine a lot; it’s rigged with an Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 Pro Lens, Edelkrone Follow Focus One, and Genustech Matte Box

I like the cage, but the components of the kit are a little flaky (baseplate). It is a good deal. Just don't try to take the Metoabones support off the baseplate - It will not go back on!! Not really a big deal, I was planning on replacing it. Not sure how secure it is. But the cage is top notch. Maybe wish it had nato rails on sides. And the top handle although good as a handle, is not too stable for too much stuff, mainly I tried to put handles on it, but it torques too much. So lesson is, use as designed.

I looked at a lot of different cages before I bought the Movcam. I am really glad that I chose that one. I love that the cage weighs nothing. I love that it has two ways to support a Speedbooster. I love that it has a quick release so I can pop the cage off the rod support. I love that the rod support has a native Arri dovetail receiver built in so I can use the dovetails and shoulder mount I already own. I love that you can change camera batteries without having to remove the camera from the rod support, which is a problem with some cages. So far, I haven't found anything that I don't like about it. And it was about half the price of some of the cages I looked at.

Replaced SmallRig’s GH5 cage with Movcam’s, & for the most part have been very happy with it. Love how form fitting, & lightweight, it is, which facilitates leaving it attached all the time, something I wasn’t comfortable doing with the SmallRig.

My major gripe is how tedious it is to attach the HDMI support. Also wish there was somewhere secure to park the screw used in the baseplate’s Metabones support when it’s not in use. It’s an odd size screw, & may be tricky to replace if lost, so would have been good for Movcam to drill a hole in the baseplate to store it.

On a related note: has anyone found a container to protect the delicate screws of the HDMI Support during transport? Been using a Pill Bottle, but need a slightly larger model, or another option. Bonus points if the container would also fit the extra NATO rail adapter that’s only needed when using the GH5’s XLR Adapter. Something to keep the bits organized, & no bigger than needed.

Follow up on my quest for a protective cover for Movcam’s detachable HDMI Support.

Always had issues with attaching the HDMI Support’s thin red thumb-screws to the GH5’s body, so decided to just remove them. There’s very tiny “C” shaped retaining clips holding the screws to the HDMI Support, & I had to use a flat head jeweler’s screwdriver to pry these off. Took a bit of effort, & I lost the clips in the process, but the screw were easy to remove afterwards.

When not in use I can now rotate the HDMI Support 180* & re-attach it to the cage so the Support is on the “wrong side”, which allows the LCD to fully rotate when opened. This build makes the camera a bit narrower, & I no longer worry about losing the HDMI Support, or protecting it’s dainty red screws.

Have used the cage this way for a few months, & never had an issue, but if going down this route suggest testing the Support flipped around before removing the red screws. With my Support flipped the “wrong way” it almost looks like the Support’s arm is bent a bit, but think it’s just the alignment of the cages’ threads as it’s sits properly when attached the “right way”.

Well I can't trust mounting the cage directly to the Kessler quick release anymore, it seamed like it was holding fine but the cage/camera slid right off during my last shoot, thankfully right into my hands. Had to put a Kessler plate on the bottom of the cage and will continue to do so in the future.
