.mov?

With a goal of keeping size to a minimum, quality to the maximum while retaining the alpha channel (green screen shoot) what would you render to? Editor needs footage with green screen and edits in FCP.

Cross platform... mmm... for cross platform your best bet would probably be Cineform. Not too big and can retain the alpha channel. Editor would have to rewrap the files to .Mov. Shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise .Mov uncompressed I suppose - going to be huge though.

I'd look at a lossless codec like Lagarith - max quality and minimum file size. Don't know whether FCP can read Lagarith .avi though...

No, its a Video for Windows codec.

Look at DNxHD or GoPro-Cineform. Both are free, cross-platform and can retain Alpha channel. Note that you have to look under Quicktime on your render page, not AVI as you would normally do with Cineform. Both GoPro-Cineform and Avid DNxHD will appear under Quicktime.
