Mounting my letus

In anticipation of my new letus extreme coming next week, I was curious about the proper setup needed to start shooting with it. I've never used a 35mm adapter before and I hear people saying that the first time you set it up, it takes longer...but to do what exactly? I was under the impression I screwed it on, attached it to my rods (indirails) and after zooming/focusing on the gg I was good to go...is there something I'm missing? Also, does anyone know if the hvx has a setting to turn off the focus ring rather than me having to tape I'd down?

Thanks,
Mark.

Well, I received mine over the weekend. I am the newbiest of the newbies. It took me less than 30 minutes to mount everything and to start shooting. I'm still exploring a lot of things as far as Camera parameter values and others to optimize the picture quality etc... but this is beyond mounting and using.

But I did a lot of research, study, reading etc... I also did a lot of buying, getting ready for my adapters.

I've heard that as well from users of some of the other adapters -- I've heard people say they spent 11 hours adjusting and tweaking to get it right. I can't fathom what they're doing with that time, or what's wrong with their adapter that they'd need to do that.

The Letus Extreme will have you shooting in about 30 seconds.

No, you're just using an easy-to-configure adapter instead of one of the ones that apparently needs massive setup for some reason.

Nope.

Apparently you've never had the pleasure of setting up an M2.

livelikeriley - there is a diy option for locking focus. search for focus plug in the diy section and it should come up. I'm pretty sure Bob Hill was the original poster.

Or on a canon...there are presets that can be set to avoid the backfocus from being wacked out of focus.

I have not. But if you're saying that 11 hours of setup time is normal for M2 users, I find that just outrageous. I've used several adapters and you just plug 'em on and go. If any adapter manufacturer's product is not plug 'n' go, they are behind the times and need to update their product to match what the others are offering.

The M2 takes a few more minutes to configure in comparison to the Brevis but neither have taken me 11 hours to set up - in fact I was using one of the M2 Beta units a couple of years back and even pulling the thing apart ( I was so intimate with it my wife thought I was cheating on her...), it still wasn't more than an hour or so to get into the guts and have to move the gg. By the way, they've completely fixed that issue way back. With the optional hard mount on the M2 now, I can't see setup being any longer than an other adapter - Each has it's quirks but for the most part, they've been easy enough for me to set up - granted if you have never used one, it's a different look, different way of thinking while using it. Just takes time to be comfortable - the nice thing is everyone seems to be going upright in some way or another - this is huge and I think you'll see more people jump on board because it's now that much easier to work with them.

There are people who have no problems with the M2, and there are others that can't ever get them right. The problem with the M2 is that there are too many components that affect image quality that do not have tight tolerences. If the motor mount is a little off, you have to try to adjust that. If the the GG doesn't sit perfectly on the spindle, you have to try to adjust that. If your infinity focus is off, have fun moving the GG mount on the spindle. Sometimes the railblock isn't perfectly parallel with the GG, so you have to open the unit to adjust that. Hard mounting doesn't solve any of these issues. This was in January of this year, so I don't know what you mean by 'way back'.

Also, I've seen enough adapter footage to know what's acceptable to one person, might not be to someone else.

The Brevis was giving us far sharper footage in the first minute of set-up than we ever got out of the M2. We might of had a difficult M2, but there's no shortage of people who have pulled their hair out trying to get an optimal set-up.

I still love the M2 look and think it's one of the best out there if you can put up with the light loss, but it's just too much of a hassle to use.

Honestly,I tried for weeks to optimize my m2 but had no fortune.I soon gave my m2 his walking papers.

I suppose you could always make a movie about setting up the M2. Probably needs more of a plot line though...
