Mounting monitor upside down

Hello tech-savy people,

I have an upcoming shoot, we're going to use the redrock adapter.
What will happen if we place a sony PVM-9L3 monitor upside down (part from the image being upside down.. :))?

Cheers,

Klosse

You have to shoot backwards too becuse the camera is upside down, the picture is drawn backwards (like on the monitor).
So you have to have your actors walk backwards and talk backwards too. (it is a good idea to pre-record the soundtrack, then play it backwards during the shoot so that it's easier to lip-sync to). If there is any complicated action be sure to rehearse.
This is actually how fight scenes are shot beacuse you don't have to worry about hitting people (hence the term "pulling punches").
It's another reaosn to be excited about the HVX.. because you can shoot at different speeds with it, you can walk backwards eaiser if you are only dooing it at half-speed.

:).. you are pretty a funny geezer mikko. By the way, I saw your steadicam operating on omenatiikeri, pretty well flown there!

But seriously, can it be bad for a CRT to operate upside down?

The only possible issues that might cause concern for an inverted mounting of a CRT would be ventilation issues. The design of the enclosure likely accounts for natural convection flow and an inversion might somewhat reduce the efficiency of this aspect. I doubt that it would be an issue, but just watch for extremely elevated case temperatures, if none are encountered, then you should have no concerns.

One last thought, you should probably degauss the monitor once it is inverted as its earth orientation would obviously be different.

Where did you see Omenatiikeri? Thanks for the compliment :-)

I don't think it's a problem to run a monitor upside down. - I know ppl here do it alot with 'mini35' clones.
I've had monitors upside down before and it's never damanged them.
I would be a little more carefull about handling them though, just because of the way they are made, the internal component's arn't *quite* as well supported when they are upside down. Sony's are prety well built though, and it only beeing a 9", non of the inside parts are that heavy anyway.

Edit: To add to Khmuse's coment about ventilation.. if you are shooting outside in Vaasa in the next 4 monthes.. don't worry about it :P

Shooting exteriors there at this time of year about the only concern would be the monitor freezing to the ground and having to wait until late spring to be able to retrieve it!

A MEN!

And yes, spring is SO late here.. and I'm allready sick of winter.

- Mikko *just walked home in the snow.

Thanks for the replys guys! This certainly will make shooting go abit smoother, me thinks. I remember that I had quite a stiff neck from bending around checking the monitor after the last shoot, as the camera assistant insisted on that inverting a CRT would definitively damage it in some special exotic way...

Yeah, loads of snow here also atm. It kinda puts you in a christmas-y mood though *<:)

Mikko, I downloaded it off the filmillinen page. Very nice work. It seems steadicam workshops do pay off... :) How often do you practice?

Cheerio,

Klosse

You high latitude guys always complain in the winter months, but come next June and July you will all be bragging about available light exterior shots at 21:00 (9PM) and how much ND you needed to use to get the aperture you wanted!

21:00? haha. we are good to shoot through 11p in the sumer! - and the sun is allready well up at 4 (thoguh i'm not)
Bah.. the sun comes up imay.. and it takes untill the end of july just for us to thaw out :P (plus i'll prolly be headed to Alaska for the summer again.. and it's always raining there ugh.)

Yes the Steadicam workshops are well worth it.
(for all you guys complaining about having to shell out a $1000 for a [super basic] rig.. a week long workshop alone is $2200 if you are serious about it)

I don't practice near enough at the moment, generally only about every other day.

P.S. [shamless plug] I got a music video coming out soon that I shot recently.. stay tuned. [/plug]
