I recently had the fortune to climb Mount Whitney while filming a documentary. This was my first chance to really put the GH4 through its paces. I put this short together with a quick test of FilmConvert.
Filming Specs:
Lenses: Sigma 18-35 w/ M43 Speedbooster
Lumix 100-300
Tiffen Vari-ND
4K 23.98
CineD -2, -4, -5, -1, 0 (Night shots were CineV -4, -4, -2, -2, 0)
Highlight -3 Shadow 0
i.Dynamic and i.Resolution Off
Master Pedestal Level 0
Luminance 0-255
Edited in FCP X using FilmConvert (Set at CineV rather then CineD)
A few notes from the production:
• Camera performed flawlessly in below freezing temperatures. Only small issue was that the touchscreen had a bit of trouble accepting input when colder.
• LCD screen is mostly useless in sunlight without a hood.
• Batteries last up to 4 hours of shooting (Compared to about 45 minutes on my old 7D).
• Went through 8 Transcend 128GB cards, all worked perfectly.
• Camera crashed once while finishing up a time-lapse, had to remove the battery, but did not lose any media.
• A 2013 6-Core Mac Pro will play back the 4k footage from the GH4 perfectly including most effects. However, once film convert is applied, footage needs to be rendered to play smoothly.
