FAQ Mount the Sony FS5 on the DJI Ronin?

Hello,

I am planning on using the new Sony FS5 with the DJI-Ronin.

But my question is, is this overkill? Would the DJI-Ronin-M work just as well?

I believe the new Sony FS5 will be about 5lbs (using the kit lens) -- and the Ronin-M supports 8lbs. Is that too close to the high-end?
Is the Ronin-M meant exclusively for DSLRs?

I have not previously used the DJI-Ronin and would be purchasing it as an upgrade to an ancient hand-held glidecam.

I had the FS700, FS7 and the BMPCC on the Ronin - all worked well. The FS5 will work on the Ronin-M quite well for sure - but not the FS7.
If you are sure you won't need a bigger camera on the Gimbal it's probably the best choice for the money. Why don't you go for a rental for a day?

Thanks for the input!
Particularly that instagram picture.

Just an observation, it looks like he's unattached the FS5's screen and attached it to the handle bars?

Unfortunately where I live, you can't rent a Ronin easily without shipping it in from somewhere else.

One thing to consider is extension arms. The Ronin-M might not have long enough extension arms to get perfect balance of the FS5. I had to install Extension arms on the regular Ronin for the FS7. Same might go for your situation too. The weight won't matter, the Ronin has very powerful motors.

Yes, it's quite overkill.

The Ronin is not as easy to breakdown as the RoninM as the arm are in one piece only.
F7 can even be used on it if lenses are light.

Usually, this is to use with wide angle, so the 10-18 is just great there.
With a FS5, it will work perfectly with even longer lens.
Your screen can be used as preview and the arm as supporting the ronin.
Just great if you want my advice

I show a bit more eon how to do this here, yes, you need few cheap item to make sure the balance is right without power at first

I agree. The 10-18 is a great lens for the FS5 on the Ronin-M, but the viewfinder can still hit the back of the Ronin-M if you need to tilt way up. I have a clamp to put the Odyssey on the Ronin-M cross bars so I can record RAW. The only issue is that it starts to get heavy. I have to set it down between takes.
You can also mount the camera grip to the bars to turn the camera on and off. Programming touch autofocus to one of the camera grip buttons is very helpful.
