Motorcycles! Trucks! Cars! Babes!

So, a few friends and I set out to make the best action movie that we could in one month and here's one of the highlights of the finished product. Yeah, the color correction is kinda off, but we built all the camera mounts (took a dvx to 120mph), had a jib arm on the back of a truck, etc etc. I was 'action director' and editor.

Feedback is much welcome

Suspended - Car Chase - 16.4mb Quicktime 2:12

Oh, and it's probably more like 'Motorcycle! Truck! Car! Babe!' : )

Nice job. My suggestion would be too cut the shot a little quicker before she swerves under the overpass. The motorcycle slows down and doesn't match with the speedometer reading 60 m.p.h. The following scene through the pilings could be sped up a bit, too. It looks a little slow to me. This aside, it looks exciting. Great cutting and camera work. I look forward to checking out the entire film. Could you share your car/motorcycle mount designs?

That was pretty sweet. I liked that part when the motorcycle went between the two cars. Is that part of a short film or a feature?

It's part of an eight-minute short, and for the action sequences we shot at 1/500
I'll look into the mount plans, I don't think we drew them up before we made them, but if I can find them, I'll post some pics.

That was rad.

I liked the in-out focus and juttery movements. I think it helped with suspense. The cropped quicktime was a nice touch too/.

That looked pretty cool! But am I right in guessing that the wheel shots on the bike were not shot with a dvx? They look a lot lower resolution than the rest of the footage (I'm guessing it was shot with one of those tiny 1ccd pinhole cameras at 480 lines of res...)

Anyways, footage looked cool, but I think you need to cut quicker and do some cc.

Keep up the good work! (I know it's hard to shoot action especially with a bike... i've shot action stuff with a bike myself)

Your money shot was the jib shot of the girl introducing her character before she takes off. By far the best shot in the whole sequence.

Some great shots in there, but the scene runs a little long in my opinion. And maybe I'm just lacking context from the rest of the movie, but I had NO idea who anyone else is in those other cars. Who are they chasing? I can't tell.

But whatever. It looks great. The only thing I would say is that those motorcycle POV shots, cool as they are, are actually lowering your overall production value because of the low quality and lack of focus. I'd reshoot those. And then I'd spend a bunch of time color timing your shots so they match up.

Very nice... I'm really lovin' the fast shutter speeds, works well here. Would love to see you upload the whole piece, as it would be nice to see the context behind that sequence.

Not bad. Most of the edits and cuts are good. A few that could be cut a little tighter. One of them mentioned above.

Btw - I can't believe that rider didn't eat the dirt when they sped through the dirt section near the start of the clip. I swear it looked like the front wheel hit a rut and slid out.

This is definitely the money shot. What throws me, though, is the train moving in the background. It disorients the view on the move up, because it feels like the bike is moving, which can be cool.

Yeah, I thought the dirt was bad, but the worst was jumping the bike off of the ledge. We did it about five times, and in the end cracked the oil pan, but it was all good. We just TIG welded it and it came out okay. We had thought we cracked the case. It was about to be the most expensive movie we ever made.

Part of the problem with those shots are the Quicktime compression, but I agree they do get really blurry especially after the inter-car pass. I think we attributed it to that for some of the times, the cameras were on auto-focus, so when you're flying at 60-120mph, it has a hard time keeping up. Yeah, dumb mistake, but overall, it was the best we could do. Our budget ended up being about $100 for feeding everyone.

Oh, and that jib shot. I love that jib shot.

The shots were great!!! I think you should have used quicker cuts to emphasize the emotion of the scene, and stayed consitant with the jump cuts, use em or don't! But overall it was great!

Really cool man. Good cuts, colors, shots, etc. I knew it was auto focus! Was that a mistake or did you think you'd need it set that way. None of those shots seemed to really need AF and I agree, it did lower the overall production value. Good stuff though, maybe cut around them? What car mount did you use? I just got a Stickypod and I can't wait to do a car chase.

I wish we had a sticky pod. We made ours out of some scrap steel we had around, we bent it and welded it so it would slide over the Celica window, (lined the inside) and made room for a tripod plate which we'd screw in. Quick and dirty.
Yeah, and the autofocus was a mistake. Dang . : )
