Motorcycle Riding School

Here's a little spot that was given to me, last minute, for this free DVD publication we have here.  It's a staple in Chicago, as they seem to own every single bus bench ad in the entire city.  Fun to shoot (with the DVX of course) and fun to edit, but they just "wanted something flashy" and I was a bit rushed for time, so I think there isn't a whole ton of uniformity in the thing, but eh, what can you do?  Hopefully it's flashy enough.

For the technicals, it was edited in Vegas and effects in After Effects, with lots of use of Trapcode and Magic Bullet plugins.

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

Very cool. Reminds me of the MSF course I took a couple years ago. ;D

I think it fits the "flashy" bill just fine.

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

dude...excellent...how'd you do that swirly line animation and body-outline-transitions? In After effects?

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

The swirly lines were made with a slightly tweaked preset in Trapcode's Particular plug-in for After Effects. The body outline stuff was also done in AE, with Trapcode's 3D stroke. Pretty easy effects -- it's just the masking that can eat up all your time.

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

very cool effects.  it seems that trapcode is a decent program. i have seen it a few times on this site.

awesome job ;D

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

that was pretty cool. once upon a time I took a motorcyle riding course to get my license instead of taking the test, cuase it was cheaper, and also you didnt have to take the road test, and it teaches you good info on riding that makes you a better.

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

Yeah, Trapcode makes some cool little plugins, and you see them in nearly everything anymore (Shine, in particular). They're amazingly cheap too, in comparison to others -- I think they sell them at $99/per, which is just amazing. A great company. Blessed be those Swedes.

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

that was very cool.

How did you get the Trapcode effect to flow "behind" the people walking ?

Did you make masks for all those frames ?

Thanks,
Derrick

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

Yeah, I went in and masked everything. Not every single frame, but nearly 95% of them, I would guess. Besides the layering, the masking also allowed me to fake the DOF a little too, by bluring the background more than was possible in-camera. Probably can't see much of that though, on the little Quicktime screen.

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

Technically it's good, and I think its got a flashy feel you were going for.

But like you said though, it lacks uniformity. It just needs more developed creative and conceptualization.

Re: Motorcycle Riding School

I completely agree.  Just wish I would have had a little more time and/or some sort of specific creative direction.  If anything, it's good fodder for the mo-graph reel.
