Motion sickness - 24p diffent on HMC then DVX?!?!?

My favorite vendor kindly loaned me an HCM150 24h! I was a happy man!

So, I immediately set the camera to 1080p24 and started what ever was in my path! I made sure that I shot at 1/48th and did slow movements. Keep in mind I'm a long time DVX100 user, and shoot 24p 90% of the time. I've also shot with a HVX200, a HPX500, and a HPX 170. So I know how to handle pans and movements to minimize the famous 24p jitter... to the point that I don't notice it at all!

As I was playing back the footage on my 42" Sharp Aquos HDTV via the HDMI cable, I started to get motion sickness. Something that never happened to me before. The jitter was AWFUL! Totally unacceptable in my book! So... thinking it was the recorded material, I made some tests live, and hold and behold?!?!? Same damn thing! Also, the 1080i60 and 720p60 seem to be off a bit, some minor ghosting in pans.

Is the model that I have defective? Or is this typical of the model? Or am I doing something terribly wrong, some setting that totally eluded me? I checked every possible setting in the menus... made some tweaks here and there... but no changes. Help! I really wanted this camera to work, as I planned to buy it. But the DRASTIC jitter is way too much!

Oh, and one more thing! In 720p60, I notice skewing! Isn't that a CMOS with rolling shutter issue?

PS: My TV is fine, as HD shows and Blurays I watch are fine, clear, clean and perfect.... from movies (24p), to news reports (60i)

Interesting post.

Last night I hooked up my HMC-150 to my 52" Samsung and noted the same thing. 720/60 is VERY skewy for me too. My Samsung is 1080 and 720p with a 5ms response time.

As far as 24 at 1/48 I can't comment but I'll try that tonight.

All right! I did some more testing! And.... well... Something is wrong with my TV, because it does things it never did before! And I get the same results with my DVX, and they weren't apparent before. Checked the settings, but nothing seems out of the ordinary. Although in the NLE, playing the footage, there are still slight signs of ghosting, but very minor, and in low light. But they seem to be amplified on my "crapped-out" $1500 HDTV... Boohoo! Arghhh!

As for the skewing... well... another mystery... because I reset the HMC150 to factory defaults and no more skewing! I'm playing the footage frame by frame in FCP, and nothing. Go figure! The previous renter must have changed something, somewhere. I mean.. it's not as if there was a menu choice for rolling shutter?!?! Go figure!

I was going to suggest maybe it was your tv because I have shot 24p and 60p and it has been smooth. Im glad its not your camera but it sucks that its your tv.

Yeah, it really sucks!

The hdmi output of the hmc150, is it always 1080i60 or 720p60, or can it actualy output at a true 24p? Maybe my Tv sucks at pulling down?

Flintstone, I'm not sure if this is your issue but it may help. We recently purchased a Sony Bravia. I noticed that when playing back 24p there was a cadence problem so everything looked juddery and skippy. There was nothing in the manual about 24p issues or playback but after some poking around I realized that the TV was set to cinema mode. It appeared to be doing a pull down of some type on the 24p material. I assume that this is for 24 frame movies that are wrapped in 29.97 or 60i for broadcast or DVD. Once I turned off the cinema mode, it was smooth as glass. Again, there was nothing in the manual about that and I had to go into the initial set up menu to find the setting. I assume this is there because they don't think folks will be actually watching native progressive material very much. pw

When I played back 24P material from my PS3 to my TV, I've noticed much more studder than viewing 24P material from the DVX... weird...
