most overrated movie ever

Re: most overrated movie ever

I agree with Rich

I think on that list there are many you can still respect(they dont just stumble into movies costing millions by pure luck). We can get into a semantics thread on the idea of 'hype' and how its subjective to taste. If pulp fiction made no money it would be a cult classic, citizen kane is in a diffrent era of film making and deserves its praise.

So maybe hype and dislike need to be seperated.

Re: most overrated movie ever

This thread was based on our opinions about who we felt was overrated. The reason I named Nicolas Cage was based on my feeling that he just doesn't have that magnetic personality that attracts me to a character. He has been in some really cool movies, but for the most part he just comes across as a dull and boring individual, he just doesn't have that Charisma and stretching of characters.

Actors like Mel Gibson, Ethan Hawke, Jim Carey, Tommy Lee Jones have the ability to play different characters and you forget who they are while you are watching the movie. Watching Gibson in say the Patriot or Man Without a Face, makes you forget he was Mad Max or Riggs in LW. Or Jim Carey in Man on the Moon (I haven't seen Eternal Sunshine yet) makes you forget he was Ace Ventura or for those of remembering from back in the day.....Fire Marshall Bill. Or Tommy Lee Jones playing Ty Cobb makes you forget he was in Men in Black.

When I watch Nicolas Cage in Snake Eyes, 8MM, Con Air, his character and demeanor just can't get "It Could Happen to You" out of mind.

Maybe i went into it this wrong, sorry. When we are talking overrated, does that mean overpaid, over-hyped, not who you don't like as an actor.....
or a movie that really sucked or didn't have the best plot/storyline but made an astronomical amount money.....like Titanic.

Am I wrong.....

It's impossible for an oppinion to be wrong. Right on brotha! (not to be confused with "Right on Boda.")

Re: most overrated movie ever

What about actors that always seem to play the same part?

Denzel Washington should really have been a cop,
Tommy Lee Jones should have been his supervisor,

Re: most overrated movie ever

IMHO one of the most typcast person in Hollywood is Morgan Freeman.

How many times has he played an old detective, helping out a younger, attractive co star?

Re: most overrated movie ever

I will vote yes to that. He is always on the older nicer mentoring side of the film.

Re: most overrated movie ever

Same with Tom Hanks, he has had a laundry list of movies under his belt- usually in the same context of his humor and personality(only real stretch was philadelphia. With him it becomes a "Tom Hanks Movie"

Re: most overrated movie ever

Mmmm, I would agree with that for the most part. However, I'd say it was about 50/50 in Catch Me if You Can.

no...its your opinion...dont be sorry either, no reason to be.

maybe i just feel like the thread should be "your most despised actor/director/movie ever"

Rodriguez? how is he overrated? personaly im not into his movies. but, i totaly respect him for how he got started, and for how he makes a film. its not like his movies make tons of money or if he is winning tons of awards or even getting big budget projects...he just is there making things...i dont think anyone expects amazing things from him. anyway, one thing i dont like about him, is that he puts his name in the credits like a dozen different times...i find that kinda annoying.

Re: most overrated movie ever

Thats true, I will go 50/50 also.

Plus Im not saying it in a negative way for Hanks, good for him he deserves the fame. Ive enjoyed his work since bossom buddies :D

Re: most overrated movie ever

i personally think all the mallrats and jay and silent bob movies are ridiculous.

if I sat in a car, smoked a pound of weed, drank a 40 and decided to start writing, Jay and Silent bob would be the outcome....

THEY JUST ARENT FUNNY

Re: most overrated movie ever

"your most despised actor/director/movie ever"
I agree Rich, it is to difficult to seperate between your honest dislike for the work and the idea of hype. You will ultimatley consider what you dislike to be over hyped. Thats natural.

you almost have to like the project and than claim it hyped based on a more honest outlook.

Re: most overrated movie ever

See Aaron you are right to have an opinion on what you think is or isnt funny. But I think it would be imature of you to attack the writing involved for kevin smith.

You may not find it funny, but he taps into a Jersey/New York culture that many people find humor in. Than you have Dogma more on the  political and religious attack, once again in many opinions well written. As far as Jay and Silent Bob go, subjective humor but I wouldnt go as far as belittle the work

ah, right...yes, its difficult to seperate. i thought Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was OK. i went in with high hopes because a friend HYPED it up big time...and i mean BIG TIME! she didnt give anything away, but i went in thinking i would have a live changing experience...anyway....but i would never call it overrated...or hyped...i guess i would call it RUINED for me...so maybe this is a bad example...hmm...nevermind... :P

Re: most overrated movie ever

jay and silent bob movies crack me up...parts of dogma made me cry i thought they were so funny.

In retrospect, I realize that he is not overrated. Just greatly admired. Everyone (by everyone, I mean filmmakers) talks about how great he is, but I realize now that it's because of his start, and who he is, not necesarily his skills with direction.

I love Kevin Smith flicks, they all have awesome call backs to eachother.

Can't agree with tht at all.

Road to Perdition
Forrest Gump
Catch Me IF You Can
Castaway

I saw the character, not Tom Hanks

I mentioned this in a similar thread: You can dislike something (or someone) and still believe they are good. It's more than an issue of personal taste

Re: most overrated movie ever

Steven Spielberg has given the world most of the "classic" movies of the last 30 years. He's done sci-fi, drama, comedy, war, and so much more - all of these films are loved by many people. Over rated I think would imply that teh majority of people *don't* like the work, but there are enough sources claiming them as being the best. Many people truly do love what Spilberg has created - that's a VERY bold statement to say he's overrated at all!

Personally, I think he's the greatest director of our time - and it's hard to disprove that based on his versatility, monetary success, and objective quality about most of his work.
