GH3 Most 'organic' look I have seen so far .... How to get this?

For starters, the one thing I can say is I don't use any of the GH3 settings in FC.
I actually spoke with them back when we first got it and they hadn't got a copy of it as of then.
I encouraged them to create the profile based on a -5 -5 -2 -5 starting point but it seems that the profiles are based on a 0 0 0 0 setting.

I use the generic RGB as a starting point which works great with FJ Prov, Velv and Superx, for a really nice look with GH3 footage.
For me it takes away the one negative I've felt about the camera - the bit videoish color space and exposure curve, even shot flat.

Interesting input. Thanks! Can you link to a video with your settings so I can check out the finished result?

I've just seen a video, shot with the GH3 and even with the 14-140mm kit lens, that blew me away. It looks so organic, so filmic or cinematic

...I shot a corporate interview last Friday where the main subject was shot against this huge window overlooking the city of Toronto.

In post I adjusted the gamma and video levels to "grey" the maximum highlight levels, and was pleasantly surprised at how much the footage looked like what I would traditionally call the "film look". I did this mainly to control the contrast of the original shot, but the finished footage looked a lot like the link you posted. It's an internal corporate job so I can't post anything, but I would definitely start with your gamma controls to help produce the image you are after. ( I edit with Sony Vegas Pro, so most of the work is done by the Sony "Levels" plug-in )

Agree with others. I like yours better. You are on the right track. Have you tried a noise reduction plugin, like neat video. I could see a few darker shots where I might use it conservatively.

Alright, I finished my latest wedding video. Give this film a different look and IMO it is more organic and film like. Promised to post it here, so there u go.

Around 30% of the shots are 5D Mk 2 / 7D shots. The rest is the GH3 with contrast / saturation / sharpness at -2. You can spot the difference quite easily I guess.

Here's the clip.

No way in hell this thing looks cinematic. It's Flat, colorless, DSLRish all the way. Also pretty boring I must add.

When I get a chance I'm going to do a write up on the work we've done with the GH3 and Filmconvert, settings for different uses etc. (probably on my own site/blog).

But I'll start by reiterating - if you're trying for a more organic look you can;t get it by starting with contrast, sharpening dialed up - which you are if they're anything above -5.

We did a ton of testing w/ and w/out NDs variable NDs, and settings from Vivid to Portrait and a simple starting point of Natural, -5 -5 -2 -5 is the best place to start building a look.

And Filmconvert, using the right combination of settings, works as a great "LUT" for these flat settings.
And again, depending on the nature of the scenes, I've found a couple of combinations that make the GH3 sit well beside virtually any of the footage people are showing from the C100, BMC etc.

The GH3 is an absolute little monster when you consider what it offers at just about every level.
For instance, aside from a nice little sensor and color, the BMPC is like a model T compared to the functionality/usability of the GH3.

Hate to be bothersome, but I'm quite intersted in the writeup you mentioned about your findings with filmconvert and the GH3.

Has this been posted yet, and if so, where can it be found?

Thanks!

I'm in the final weeks of a year of creative directing/producing a new museum and series of films (all with GH3s).
When I get a break in Nov. I'll definitely get at it.
