Mosquito and Block noise in DVX100A.

Hi,

I recently got my AG DVX100AE. This is my first professional camcrder. So far I was in the Sony boat. The last cam I had, and disposed off recently, was the Sony MICROMV IP220.

So I really do not have any idea whatsoever as to the 'expected' problem of Mosquito and Block noise in such high end camcorders as the DVX100AE. I understand these noises are part of any digital video, and some latest DVD recorders from Pansonic also claim to remove these image disturbing artifacts effcetively.

My question is as to what, or how much, nosie on these accounts should be considerd as normal, in DVx100 family. Also are there any inbuilt camera mechanisms to address these issues. And do we have any links to see some sample images from DVx100 with these artifacts?

Grateful for any expert reflections on these thoughts.

Re: Mosquito and Block noise in DVX100A.

Is the question really so irrelevant that despite so many views no one found it interesting enough to comment on. ::)

Re: Mosquito and Block noise in DVX100A.

if you shoot in too dim of conditions to make decent video ,or use a junky codec then this might be an issue. otherwise theres no need to worry abut these things. knowing how to shoot video makes all the difference. in the hands of a fool. im sure they would come home with a tape full of dung, and think the cam is all to blame...shouting "this cam is stupid..it makes grainy footage, and macroblocks!! :) lol anyway no, these things are not an issue. just look at the scrren garb and clip section in the forum, and see for yourself if you see any occurences of them

Re: Mosquito and Block noise in DVX100A.

If you are shooting in a dimly lit area and are getting grain there are some chroma settings that you can adjust to get better results, but like iamloser said, it really depends on how you use the camera. Think of it as a tool, like a hammer. When the hammer was invented i'm sure that the first person to hit his finger cursed at the hammer and called the manufacturer complaining that the hammer was bad because it really messed up his finger. The camera is a tool that takes light and converts it into immages. If there is no light, then no image can be produced. IF there is poor light then a poor image is produced. Expecting that the camera will perform miricles and give you great looking pictures when not enough light is available is just not right. With the proper lighting and even some not so proper lighting (see my lowlight test posted in the other thread), the dvx will give you the latitude to make beautiful immages.

Dear iamloser

thanx for ur comments. so it means that most of the fuss by big companies like Sony and Pansonic about their so called newly developed techniques of 'eliminating' such noise (through special filters for instance in the latest models in Sony TVs and Pana DVD recorders) is just a marketing hoax.

I really agree with you, as lately, while using my 100AE, I had actually myself realised what you just said. however ur confirmation has given me the real confidence I was looking for.

And so does it also mean that while outputting the raw footage from the camera to a DVD for domestic use, it would'nt really matter (as far as the elimination of such noise is concerned) whether we do it through an NLE system or through one of the latest Pana DVd recorders, for instance? Is it also true that while using these DVD recorders, picture quality is further improved due to additional compression?

Thanx any way

Re: Mosquito and Block noise in DVX100A.

..actually, it meams that they probably HAVE eliminated most of the issues, but the cam isnt magical and if you try hard enough, or simply dont know what your doing, you can still make a crappy image, and get somcpression artifacts.

..compression means your dumping image information, in exchange for somthing that is relatively close enough to the original true and highly detialed information so that you can group more information together, and therefore have a smaller storage/file size for the image. compression never increases the quality of a picture., unless its doing some chroma smoothing or blending, or similar function, but all in all with each compression, the total overall image quality is degraded. relatively speaking, mpg2 compression would never improve on a dv compressed image resolution wise. so im really not sure if doing it straight through the dvd player would be better or not, thats really all relative pending what sort of quality compression the players/recorders do. certainly they wouldnt do as well as a multi pass software encoder like tmpg. but im sure it would look ok enough..  really you would have to run some tests and decide if its up to par for you or not using that method.
hope this helps :)

;D Tack sa mycket (as they say in Swedish...thanks so somuch)

Re: Mosquito and Block noise in DVX100A.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned it so far... but the "detail" setting on the camera is one of the most useful for reducing image grain. If I'm not mistaken, much of the grain folks are mentioning here is due to increasing gain in low-light situations.... but the camera can easily produce grainy images with no (0) gain. This is due to over-sharpening rather than boosting gain, and this sharpening on the DVX is controlled through the detail setting. Even in well lit situations, certain things (for me, most commonly, wood grains at certain distances) cause this sharpening-induced noise.

...and the dtl. coring setting on the 100A helps further reduce noise.

Preston, what detail coring and detail setting do you prefer to get rid of noise?
