more word on Canon 5D MK3 Raw Video

Well it made me laugh. Im just going to ask one simple question that may put it in perspective.

Ok so lets say the "5DMKIII will have raw video recording @ 1080". First what do you intend to record that to?

First of finding something to record it too is not the issue, if you have sraw you are still only using 1/4 the sensor, so it would have to line skip or find some way to downsample the image, giving us the same problems we have with these cameras all ready, and there is no such thing as raw at 1080, Raw is the actually sensor size which at 21mp is alot bigger then 1080p. I see people make this mistake on here a lot where they say raw 1080p, when i think they dont understand between raw video and uncompressed video. Needless to say i have been following that canon rumors page for almost a year or so now and they have never been right on anything, it seems he'll put anything up there just to get hits on his page just for advertising. Personally I don't see canon making a RAW video DSLR, it's not worth the r&d for their market. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

In actual fact RAW can be recorded in any frame size, it depends on how / which part of the sensor is recorded. RAW is not dependant on using the whole sensor surface, its how, whatever part of the sensor is being recorded, is processed.

For example the Red MX sensor is 14 megapixels and can record:

4.5K RAW (2.4:1)
4K RAW (16:9, HD, 2:1, and Anamorphic 2:1)
3K RAW (16:9, 2:1, and Anamorphic 2:1)
2K RAW (16:9, 2:1, and Anamorphic 2:1)

Canon wouldn't release a raw recording camera if they didn't have a viable method for people to record to. However, I'll put this rumor in the category of believe when I see it.

I agree i'll believe it when i see it, I'm just so tired of the raw rumors floating around, and admit i'm even more tired of these companies not giving us what we want in these cameras. We all have read the forums a million times and know the specs we want, what we need to do is have a stronger voice like with the 5d firmware upgrade to 24p. We need to petition canon to give us the video we want from these cameras. Anyone know a way to make that happen?

ya i know but with that much crop of the sensor why even shoot with a dslr, buy an ex 1.

RED does not allow line skipped or binned RAW, but it is certainly possible and used in a variety of cameras. 1080p RAW recordings from a 21MP sensor do not necessarily have to be cropped.

There is no way on earth the 5DMK3 is going to record raw video - they still haven't found a good way to downsample -(Panasonic has) in 4 models after the 5DMK2 - 7D, T1i, T2i, 60D. I know it would be strange that the lower models would get the fix - still though, I SERIOUSLY doubt this rumor.

I agree it is extremely unlikely for the next generation of Canon DSLR to record RAW video, as they have no workflow in place or even a RAW video format in place. None of the cameras you mentioned do any downsampling for video, they just line skip, which is really just a method of reading the sensor. In fact, it seems Canon does upsample their video to 1080p for recording since their line skipping method does not seem to read data from a 1920x1080 pattern of photosites but rather a smaller pattern. They have no record of even attempting to implement downsampling for video that I know of, except perhaps the monitoring path for the 5dmk2 and 60d which downsample to <480p for monitoring. Downsampling is not difficult, but they would have to try to do it to have a chance of getting it right. It is not impossible that they would try in the future, and no matter what it would likely yield better results than relying only on their line skipping sensor reading method and upscaling which is currently how their cameras work.

Yeah I should have just said "they haven't found a good method to get a clean 1080P from their 18+ MP sensor" - I think this is their #1 issue - the other issues - audio/form factor/controls - simply the nature of the beast. If you added XLRs and all kinds of extra buttons and so forth, well then it becomes a video camera and hence a lot more expensive - like the F3 or AF100. I think CAnon DLSR video users most want minimized aliasing and the end to colored moire. That alone would be a BREAKTHROUGH.....anything else would just be icing...I hope they fix the cake first.

What a waste of time these rumours are, if anyone here has used a Red they will know its a different beast and a lot of money for a complete kit, just get on with making films and stop worrying about whats coming

^^^I do make films... almost every weekend... I still like to know whats coming down the pipeline sorry that doesnt matter to you... but obviously it does or else you wouldnt have opened a thread about the possible next 5D

Personally, I don't want XLR inputs since it will take away from the small form factor. However, it would be nice if they improve the overall audio quality and allow us to monitor it.

I would be SHOCKED if there is not significant improvement in these two areas on the next generation. I just bought a GH2 and its considerably better but don't forget that the Canon's are working off a 2 year old technology.

I want:

1)body-based IS
2)eye-lock auto focus in video.
3)full res out

As long as we're dreaming.

I want:
1) Minimal rolling shutter
2) 10-bit 4:2:2 compression
3) No Moire
4) HDMI monitoring that doesn't change resolution during recording. I don't actually care about the resolution.

Edit: I don't want RAW video.

Regardless of all these insane rumours, Im still interested to see what comes out in the next iteration of the 5D.
