Only 2 shoot days until we wrap principal photography on our feature. Last night we shot in front of LA Cityhall. This was a great location (we have great locations on this film). We also shot guns (blank firing). Here are some stills from last night.
What kind of blank gun did you use? Also, what size Mattebox is that? It looks huge! What kind of blanket does that camera have on it? Last one I swear: Was it hard to get a permit to do that in front of LA city hall? Sorry, but I really am interested in those answers, I'm not just tootin off.
Slimothy, dude don't be afriad to ask questions man. I'm sure Tmon is expecting questions so fire away bro. Thats a small gun with such a big mussle flash. Tmon, see if you can get some clips from this movie. Go snatch a copy of their dalies. Nice stuff.
I beleive it was a beretta. The special effects guys provided the blank firing guns. We were using full loads so the muzzle flash is the actual size of a real 45 ( have a real 9mm and the muzzle flash is nearly as big.) The mattebox is a larger size because we are not shooting our feature on DVX (We are using a pair of Sony Cinealta's with prime lenses). Big camera, big lenses, hence big mattebox. The blanket is just a standard packing blanket. I have all of the dailies here at my studio, (with exception of yesterday as those are being transfered as we speak). we are producing the movie.
man the way that muzzle flash lit up that guys pants is awesome. that must have been a sick shutter speed, what was it around do you know, i only ask because yu can see theh jet of flame shoot out of the barrel before it diffuses in to the fire ball in the close up.
The angles for the movie are all Charles Papert our DP (also a DVX owner and a member here). This film will have a limited theatrical release in most major cities (not straight to DVD). The shutter speed was 1/60. Here is a 4mb Quicktime from 1 of the angles. Enjoy!
hey man, the straight to video comment was strictly related to Michael Pare being in the movie, and it was supposed to come off as a compliment(stating it looked theatre worthy cuz of the composition and lighting), but I can see it being taken differently, sorry, no disregard intended. Are we viewing pics from The Perfect Sleep? If so please feel free to post any pics or clips of Roselyn Sanchez, as i'm sure your fellow dvxer's would be quite grateful.
It is the perfect sleep.
Yeah. We are doing a lot of digital bullet casings as well as some muzzle flashes and even some digital bullet hits. We were lucky to have a few blank firing guns (which seemed to jam quite often) because it gets you 90% there. For others we used a bunch of my airsoft guns (which work well and look great on camera) and a little dramatic acting because of time and money. We would do a small light flash off camera for interactive lighting. I love airsoft guns. I have been collecting these for years. Here is a pic the ones from my collection we used for the movie:
That is one sweet collection. I'd never get any work done if I had those, I'd just play all the time!
(not trying to hijack your post here...) for the first single gun pic(9mm?), I used that gun for a short thats in post. I've got muzzle flashes, that's it so far. Do I need casings flying out to make it realistic? If so know where I can find good templates? Also. I have numerous gun sounds, but I have no idea if they'd represent that gun. How does it sound? Thanks.
Hey Tim--is that clip from your camera? I don't think I remember shooting that angle, but then again...! If so, nice exposure--that's how I want the final version to look, but as we've discussed, I had to expose hotter than that for a "fatter negative"...
Too bad you don't have the stunt guy rolling down the stairs, that looked great!
