More on the 12-35

That was 3/4" U-Matic days - Now talk about sub-standard...

I like your wheel, do you mount a level on it or just eyeball it?

Just eyeballed it. I had so much going on with monitoring sound and making sure the bounce and shaders weren't in the frame that I dont think I could pay attention to a level. Good thing I wasn't also chewing gum!
It's pretty easy to use the Fig Rig. Worked perfect for this. I was surprised the OIS didn't have much effect when in the rig. I guess it wasn't bouncing enough to kick in. Great lens. Panasonic is going to sell a lot of them.

The rig seems a perfect match for this camera - it was originally used with an Aaton XTR if memory serves (LEAVING LAS VEGAS?) - that would take some strong shoulders...

Good spot, Erik- nice work on the reflector and the Fig!

Nice "walking past wipe" at :13, too.

mac- ahhh, U-Matic- them's were the days... (at least the shoulders balanced out). I shot (among other things) NFL, sprinting and schlepping cam + deck.

no wonder my back hurts...

Hi
I am new to the forum as well as AF100,
thank you for sharing all the info, experience with the lens
i have 1, love the auto focus and auto iris native on the AF100
But, at f2.8, I don't get the blur background like I use to have with other lens, for that reason alone, I want to return the lens.
i get nice blur background with my Leica M at f2.8 but almost none so far on the 12-35mm, background is blur but still very distract and it's like a main subject with slightly out of focus.
What do you think about this subject? Have anybody notice this?
I will continue to test in the next few days, I dont have a lots of experience so maybe I am missing something.
Thank you

At 12mm shallow depth of field will be much less than at 35. Wide angle lenses don't give you that look. If you want the shallow look with native MFT lenses use 25mm and up. 40mm native MFT will
look like a 85mm on a full frame DSLR. MFT isn't like a 5d. the larger sensors have a shallower depth of field.

Thanks for the response
yes i am aware of m4/3 vs full frame as I also using Nikon D800.
my main concern was at 35mm f2.8, the Panasonic don't give me the similar background like my Leica 35mm Summilux asph at f2.8 setting.
This gave me an impression that the 12/35 is not really a f2.8 lens in term of dof... It can however allow light in as much as f2.8 lens
Best regards

Post image comparison please :) As id like to see it first hand. This desmt make any sense for me

Excellent Bokeh/background blur are kind of Leica's calling cards, so comparing the 12-35 vs. a dedicated prime isn't a thoroughly fair comparison. Minor light loss in a zoom may also result in a slightly slower real speed vs. a prime (primes lose less light).

I notice the same exact thing on my Summilux-R 35 at f2.8, so you're not imagining things. Lenses are fickle creatures, each with their own peculiar sets of properties and personality.

I also have the 35 Leica-R lens, which I do really like, as well as the 50 and 90. The 12-35 - or most any zoom for that matter - won't match that in terms of its out-of-focus characteristics, or tactile feel in general. Use your primes for that... The 12-35 basically is a utilitarian lens, not an an art lens... as a documentary filmmaker, I have room for both - but it is good to be aware of the difference.

I held the Fig Rig from the top when using the push to focus button with the function enabled to create a focus zone and kept checking to make sure focus didn't change from shot to shot. It was a very different shooting style that I had to adapt to.

Eric - It would seem possible to mount a small battery powered solenoid on an aluminum bracket positioned on the rig to activate the PUSH TO FOCUS button with a momentary switch... I did this once for an underwater housing using about $20 worth of parts I found at an electronics store - even Radio Shack might have something.

Okay, this lens talks to the camera, which is great - however, I've never used a lens like this that warns me to switch the ND - I like to underexpose sometimes, often actually, and its driving me crazy having this ND warning blinking in the middle of the screen - Is there any way to turn off the ND warning? (It does it whether the exposure is manual or automatic).

The focus ring is not easily identifiable by touch next to the zoom, especially in the cold. I fixed that simply by making a 1/4" thick doughnut out of soft neoprene for the focus ring.

Another option is Panasonic's DMW-ZL1 zoom lever. I keep them on the 7-14, 12-35, 14-140, & 100-300, lenses.

Thanks, I did in fact order one from B&H when I ordered the lens, but since I ended up canceling that order (they still don't have the lens there) I forgot about it... I'll check it out.. the rubber donut for focusing is pretty nice too...
