More hi-def DVX clips

echoing something jarred mentioned before - the microsoft/landmark cinemas deal (HDnet being peripherally involved) appears to include distribution of HD stuff not as MPEG2 but as windows media 9.

More specifically I have seen windows media 9 HD (made from miniDV 29.97, and from 35mm sourced stuff - as well as DVX100 24pA stuff - the latter was my own)
projected at a cinema in vancouver (and in whistler during the film festival..)

The windows media 9 HD stuff - projected with no special hardware acceleration (other than directx video card - dunno which one) looked really good on screen - the DVX100 stuff definitely held its own against stuff sourced on HD...

(note that I also saw the Art History DVX100 stuff projected on 35mm - which looked great - I know Barry had asked me about those settings before - Digital Film Group refused to release those...sad I know - but I guess they are worried about people doing things themselves)

anyways my point being that it's VERY easy to make your own HD windows media 9 - and there are already a number of landmark theaters setup to project this and microsoft will be making sure there are more soon...

microsoft has a wm9 encoder stand alone program you can download for free

Thanx Jarred, I'll try and find it as there is a new post house opening in Pentiction ...of all places. And they are putting in a AVID DS-HD...good people too, they are interested in me doing some cutting for them. Also have 3 Avid Media Composers too..
Would like to do some DVX to HD tests, they have more than offered that up...

Well (thankfully - sorry ok I won't get into this discussion again ;o) most of the digital cinema systems that are being employed here in europe - well at least for the german market I can say this for sure - aren't supporting WMV9 at all! (hehe ok sorry I'll stop that now ;o)
So they take just standard MPEG2 HD encoding which you can do yourself too! Of course at the same quality level as WMV9 or MPEG4 these just take more space. But it's pretty straight forward to do the encoding as MPEG2 MP@HL with bitrates up to 80/90 mbps being supported.

Available software encoders that support this:
- TMPEGEnc
- Heuris MPEG Professional
- Canopus Procoder 1.5 and higher
- Mainconcept MPEG Encoder

TMPEGEnc has the best price/performance ratio of these while Canopus is currently supposed to deliver the best quality! Heuris is absolutely production proven but a little more expensive. Haven't tried out or heard anything about Mainconcept yet but I think it's mostly on par with the others.
For MPEG4 delivery there are high quality encoders available as well.. but for WMV9 only the MS solution is available (ha what a surprise)

Actually I'm currently doing some test encodings and going to test the feature of inserting own encoding into the digital cinema system directly at the cinema (both DLT tape or DVDs are supported as media).

No, I am using the pro version, but my impression is that screwing up the parameters and then downsize the result a bit gets a little bit more out of it.
Well, might not be too late for the plugin. Right now I'm only making a rough version in TV-rez of the first 3rd of the film because presentation at the filmacademy is set in about 2 weeks, and I want to show at least something. The real finishing of the film will last till june I guess, so there's plenty of time ahead.
It's not going to be like that 70s trash short, more a bit like some other b/w movie of mine. If you promise to keep it for you, I'll mail you a secret link to it.
Yeah orchestra rocks! We'll have a strings-quartet recorded this week, a 33-men orchestra next week, and again a big orchestra in late may I guess. Our music students sometimes get recording sessions for free, and luckily my one uses all of his sessions for my film.
Don't seem to be too interesting to folks here. I'll add you to my mailing list for progress updates on the project.

Bullet you're right this is a bit off topic ;-) .. of course I won't tell/show anybody anything but would be very interested in a sneak peak so to speak ;-P

@Barry - I've shown the (comparison) clips to some people and many responded with total disbelieve that this was really the DVX100 :-)
(so many people that haven't got a clue..)

A feature that I was camera operator on will be uprezzed at Crawford Post in Atlanta. We are going up to 720P to intercut with Varicam footage we shot for wide exterior shots and some slomo.

They offer a nice DVD of "what they do".

They have handled the post on a lot of TNT Movies.

I have also seen DVX100 to 35mm film blow up test footage and it looked very good. The company that did the blow up is Ascent Media. Formerly Imagetransform.
