In a completely random turn of events it looks like sony is continuing it's love affair with hdv bringing them to 7 yes SEVEN shipping hdv models.

I bring you the FX1000 and Z5 (24p, 30p, 60i):
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/conten...s-in-Japan--HDR-FX1000-and-HVR-Z5J-35471.htm#

It looks the ex1 is trying to kill panasonics market and now these are supposed to stomp into canon's market.

Aimed at canon: FX1000, Z5
Aimed at panasonic: EX1, EX3, Z7 (kinda)
General sony: HD1000, A1, V1, S270

In other news the CF card unit is now sold separately.

The crazy thing is if you think about it you can litterally own everything sony if you wanted to.

Your point and shoot can be sony
Your slr can be sony
Your camcorder can be sony
Your pro cam can be sony
You can capture audio with sony mics
You can kick back and watch all your stuff on your sony tv
You can play games on your sony console
You can watch movies on sony's new disk format
You can edit your footage on a sony computer
You can use sony editing software to do your edits
You can go to a theatre and watch the new Bond movie brought you by sony

Sony is the microsoft of everything but opertating systems. wtf.

I know this will get moved but I had to post here.

the z5j looks interesting- but whats with tape? (maybe sony makes alot of DV cassettes)

Hey...tape is cheap, and the workflow is already there. As of right now, it's the easiest (not to mention cheapest) way to go HD for most people.

Cheapest, I'll give you, considering consumer cams (though these aren't consumer cams). Easiest, I strongly disagree.

As long as there are those who won't give up tape, there will be a market for HDV.

Hey...tape is cheap, and the workflow is already there. As of right now, it's the easiest (not to mention cheapest) way to go HD for most people.

I don't see HDV lasting for a long long time like DV did, but for now and possibly the next couple years I think it is going to stick around. For event shooters the only pro-level cam is obviously the HMC150. With the AVC-HD format still being relatively young, meaning not all NLE's support it, the newer compression tech requires a faster computer, etc. I'm not surprised that some people don't want to do a cannonball dive into AVC-HD just yet.

Still though, I'm kind of surprised that Sony doesn't have an AVC-HD upgrade model of the Z1U. It would have made sense for these cams to at least do both AVC and HDV. I guess you get a somewhat clunky tapeless option with the compact flash recorder. Doesn't it just record the HDV files to the CF cards instead of tape? Why not just save the money and hassle of having extra stuff attached and just use a freakin' HDV tape?

And let me guess, the FX1000 is going to replace the FX7 at a similar price while the Z5 is replacing the Z1U and V1. You have to pony up the extra dough for a Z5 if you want the XLR inputs. I'll bet that the Z5 will cost substantially more than a Canon A1 or Panasonic HMC-150. And 24p is recorded in an interlace stream again. Having said that, both cams look nice and will probably be popular with Sony fans. They have an iris ring instead of a little dial which is nice. They improved the LCD resolution. I'm sure they will output a nice image, but just isn't enough to motivate me to switch from what I'm already using.

As for Sony having all these various types of products, I have to admit I really enjoy the Blu-ray format and the Playstation 3 is a very well designed and sturdy piece of hardware.

More than maybe...will any luck, the big Japanese manufacturers will have their best out to compete with Scarlet, provided that Scarlet actually materializes.

Maybe they will compete with Scarlet or they could just ignore it. I think that Scarlet will be a reality. Can't really criticize RED too much yet since they haven't announced an official release date. My worry with the Scarlet is that it will be in such high demand that it will be impossible to get one for a long while after the release date.

I know it may sound loony, but I think that Nikon might just be someone to watch between now and the next NAB.

This thing looks like an FX7 and an FX1 hooked up and had babies...

I don't know why people are complaining... the FX1000 pretty much solves alot of the complaints people had with the FX7 - giveis it an iris ring, bigger chips for better low light, moved the LCD back to the top handle and added PROGRESSIVE!!! Yes, it is outputted at 60i but so is the HV20 and everyone loves the 24p on that...

I know it's a Panasonic forum but why so much Sony bashing?

One thing you cant rest assured of is, Sony knows its target market and these will sell. HDV is dead is just inaccurate, as long as it remains the cheapest UPFRONT option.

Sony as a whole have kicked some goals recently, EX1, PS3, Bravia.

Well for starters, with the Z5, you have the option of recording HDV to tape or to CF card with the separate CF recorder. You can also purchase the CF recorder separately and use this with the FX1000 via firewire. You now have the ability to record to tape for archival purposes and use the CF HDV media for super fast upload and edit capability. Add to this the fact that the FX1000 will have excellent low light ability, lens mounted Iris control, have 24/30P capability (finally), and more. Will make the Z5 and FX1000 very tempting for many.

Also, I read that Sony is re-releasing the FX7 for the low price of $1,999. Looks like Sony is going to be selling a lot of FX7's again for use as 2nd cameras.

It is interesting how Sony just will not give up on interlaced shooting, and only on some of their cameras.

These cameras are interlaced and the higher-end XDCAMs favor interlaced, but the EX-1/3 add progressive.

With all new displays being progressive based, I don't understand the reasoning.

To me, 720p60 is the new 60i.

Interlaced and CMOS with Sony are the main reasons I keep favoring Panasonic in the low to mid pro segments.

Hey guys
I will posting up sample footage of the FX1000 - the latest Nov 6th 2008. I will let you guys be the judge of it - there are some bad footage shot by us (me and another colleague of mine) not because of the camera but of settings. Will it take over their competitor A1? you guys decide...

See you in a bit...
