More Birger Mount News!!

Just spent about an hour on the phone with Erik... We are in pre-production for the videos on the new adapter. I don't think I am over stating the matter when I tell you that this new Birger Mount for the AF-100 will be a serious step up from the previous model made for the RED ONE. :D

The integration between the mount and the camera is very impressive.
(Read: new features that were not in the RED ONE version!) One of the first things we realized, there won't need to be an installation video!

There will be an overview on the lens mount that everyone will be able to see on our Web Series "Info-Techs" and we'll have a full on operation and setup video in the AF-100 DVD which is also being worked on as we speak.

We start shooting the segments in January. When I pressed Erik on delivery schedule for production, he responded, "If you aren't already signed up for the General News email list... now would be the time."

If there's not much to using the adapter - why waist time making a video. Just spend the time MAKING the adapter and, maybe put out a pdf user guide. Must everything be so complicated? Sheesh!

Let's be nice folks.. I don't work for Birger. Our videos have no impact on the release schedule. I am sure there will be a PDF guide, but believe it or not, some like videos too.

Sheesh...

The info that really means something here is that the mount has a much tighter integration with the camera. In the earlier versions with the RED ONE, this was not the case.

Patience, all will be revealed.

I just remember putting my deposit in on the Red adapter in Nov. of '07 and waiting and waiting and waiting. Wound up canceling the order when I sold my Red in Oct. of '08.

P.S. I was one of those people who sent $$$ worth of goodies to Red so they'd hurry up their certification of the adapter - all for naught.

Please keep things civil and the Red complaining/bashing out of this topic. This is a mount for the AF100. And if you have nothing better to do than thread crap, don't post at all.

Jay-
Any updates on the Impero that your video showed working with the Birger? Heard there were some problems, but those may have been fixed by now.

This is not Red-bashing at all. This is in regards to MANY people's experience - albeit with the Red adapter. I'm as optimistic as anyone with regard to the adapter for the AF100. I still have the Canon lenses I was hoping to use on the Red. Sure would be nice to put them to use on the AF100. But, having gone through an adapter experience, once before, my optimism is guarded.

Kenn,

I think you mean you had an experience with mounts showing up late or not at all in the past, and you're very worried that this could happen here as well. I can understand that.

I've known Erik a while now, and he's a pretty damn reliable person. Even with all the stuff at RED, regardless of your opinion of it all, no one EVER complained about Erik's equipment, or his quality. Finally, he did get it out there.

Also we both know of another company (I'm not going to name them) that started a unit for the RED when it came out, and while I cannot believe I am saying this: People are STILL waiting for it. So lord knows there are reasons to be cautious.

In the case of Birger Engineering, I think we're in very good hands.

One more thing I'd like to point out: Erik is not making a "dumb" mount. He's making a very enhanced and elegant solution which will make use of some of the best glass out there.. This type of mount as been attempted by other people, and did not work out so well. Erik is one of the few who can really do this right, but it's not easy... Not by a long shot.

No one is more motivated to get that mount in the wild than Erik. He knows the longer it takes, the more people will look for other solutions. But he only gets one chance to do it right. He knows this.

I saw the final result of the Birger mount for the Red - and it is very impressive!

My main problem is with these promises of when products, like this one, will arrive on the market. Already, it looks like the first promise for this adapter will be missed (they were to be on the market when the AF100s start shipping.)

I'm not doubting the quality of the work or even faulting the time invested in producing the equipment. Just please, PLEASE drop the "promised release dates" unless you're dead-sure you'll be delivering on that date.

I second that. Promised delivery dates will change ones mind about a lot of things about their setup, and to leave them hanging when the date comes around when there are shoots to be done, puts us in a tough position. We then have to go research alternatives to what we thought was a pretty well planned out setup.

It's important you know that Erik has NEVER given out a release date. For the exact reasons you have mentioned. Someone on here did say Janurary, but that person does not work for Birger either, and it was a guess.

Erik has been very careful about making a promise he cannot keep. If you are not already on his email list, you should get on it, then you will know what's going on right from the horses' mouth.

I signed up for the mailing list, but have not heard any news. An update would be greatly appreciated. No promises need to be made, but a general idea of a finish date would be helpful. I'll be pushed to purchase other glass in the next few weeks to have something to use by the time the camera gets here.

Swanny I am with you. I am now looking at getting a simple EOS to m4/3 adapter as well as the 14-140. This would allow me to at least use my camera when I get it in January.

hahah, it's impossible to win in this business. If your open and transparent like Red, then you see all their missed dates, problems and lose faith. If you keep your cards close to your chest and make no promises, you end getting an earful like Birger.

I think Birger knows it's in their best interest to build a great mount, put it in on the market (they will really have a monopoly essentially) as soon as possible. They are a business just like anyone else.

As for the rest of us, we can just wait and rent in the meantime. AF100 for me is a 3-4 year investment, so as long as I can use that mount for atleast 75-80% of that time its money well spent and worth the wait.

This actually makes me a little more concerned for the price of the mount. I know nothing about the RED mount, but I know the RED costs 4 times the AF100 right? (Not much of a RED follower so sorry if that number is off). My concern is that the mount will cost like $1200 bucks and really put a damper on things for a lot of us. I really hope I am wrong on this, but being that this is a " serious step up from the previous model made for the RED ONE." makes me kinda nervous about the price.

My 10 cents.

I've been on the e-mail list for a while and haven't heard anything. I'm glad they don't come out with new promises and release dates every day like RED, but at the same time, a little update would be nice, even if it's just a "sorry, no new news" message every couple of weeks.

How do you get one the email list? I've been trying to navigate my way around their super primitive site for 20 minutes and I can't figure it out.

EDIT: found it
