Monterey Nature

I was working a conference down in Monterey, CA this weekend and the weather was just fantastic, so I took the HVX out for a ride in my spare time.

As a side note, I'm really falling in love with the P2/DV switch on the camera. When I went out to capture nature footage, I ran around filming to P2 with all my favourite settings onboard. Then i realised the next shoot was starting in 5 minutes, got a ride back to the hall, hopped out, switched the camera to DV mode, threw in a tape and all my DV settings were still there, unaffected by my setup changes in P2. Saved me time when it counted.

Here's some of my favourite shots - I'm a bird fanatic, and the sun was pretty overwhelming, but I did what I could:

Some of the stuff I got at first light the last day, but most of it was in my mid-afternoon break, when the sun was highest. The wind was strong on the beach and I got a lot of great landing shots in slow motion, which really just have to be seen to be appreciated.

The only thing I wasn't really happy with was, even though I was zoomed in all the way, iris all the way open, I still got really long depth of field. I wish the lens could give me a little more zoom so I wouldn't have to set my focus so far, but I'll just have to get lens adapters

Monterey is my favorite place to visit (fortunately it's only a 3 hour drive from my house). I LOVE it there...thanks for sharing those and letting me feel, for a few moments, like I was in my favorite place :)

Thanks you guys, I'm glad to share the beauty. Monterey really put on a display for us - for example, me and the photographer decided to go shoot (pun here) some deer in our free time, and were told you could find some in the cemetary. Well, we spotted 2 groups just on our WAY to the cemetary, which was only 3 blocks from our hotel as it was. Really, just beautiful weather, and every animal I could spot was out just enjoying themselves.

Timur, I shot in 720p but, having thought about it, probably should have shot DVCpro50 but at the time was thinking more record time with the PN and I did a lot of slow motion flight captures. With the seagulls riding the heavy winds on the beach and in slow-motion, it barely looks like they're moving at all.

well the 720 is sharper of course, but DVCpro50 looks amazing when you start CCing it. It REALLY stands up well.
