Monitors: marshall or bust???

just about to pull the trigger on a monitor. is there any reason I should NOT get the new 7inch marshall for 850 on b&h????
the IKAN and SWIT monitors are a few hundred cheaper at 5inch.
thoughts?

because peaking is not accurate and the res is not high enough so you cant pull focus ?

thats not just my observation but also there is a moment on one of the FreshDB nab videos where the interviewer questions the peaking and the rep describes the image as 'sort of in focus' - thats no good for DSLR

SmallHD or the $2000 Marshall

Im saying - if you are talking about the 480p marshall you cant focus like you can on a 720p SmallHD

If you are on a 5d you cant focus anyway but at least with a SmallHD you can check focus after the shot

Just my opinion from testing them

sorry didnt see you had suggested "smallhd" in your initial post.
looks like their 5.6 inch monitor is the way to go. just hope thats not too small. i liked the fact that the marshall is 7 inches

Because of the amount of pixels there are to view

480 on the 5 and 720ish on the 7d

it would seem that the eye can resolve those even on a smaller monitor at a reasonable viewing distance

ie I would imagine a larger monitor would only be useful if..

the camera put out more res

or

you were distant from the monitor for example using on a jib or something

the weakness of all sub $1000 monitors is viewing in the sun - at least the SMallHD has a great shade solution

I have the Marshall V-LCD70XP-HDMI and I find it to be the perfect size for my 7d.

I had the small HD and sold it because it was too big, had awful buttons on the back, and didn't have any of the peaking and exposure tools that the Marshall has.

I use it every day and love it.

what about the 5.6 small HD though? it seems to have much better resolution. not sure about the peaking stuff

Maybe you need to test in a shop - Mgees comments are not wrong !

To me exposure is judged .. (and therefore false colour not needed)

on the histogram view with the 5d or by checking a preview still on the 7d,

Peaking IMO does not confirm focus well for a DSLR (its great on my EX1) and is therfore not reliable

The buttons are on the back so they can be accessed while the shade is in place how would a shade work with a marshall

The SmallHD is IMO heavy and an item of mass on a shoulder rig

The Marshalls I tried seemed lighter (a good thing IMO)

The 5.6 SmallHD seems like a good idea if you can wait

One big gripe I have with the small HD is the battery life

Not only is it quite short but also it just goes dead - bonk - black - mid take

Im looking at a Vlock Pag solution for power (more mass and cost)

The marshalls I dont know about the batts but at least they take handycam batts that you may already have

thanks for all the help. really appreciate it. the battery issue sounds kind of nasty. i love the fact that the marshalls can take sony or panasonic batteries and i know what im getting. i may wait until the 5.6smallhd comes out and test it out.
thanks again,

I just pre-ordered a SmallHD DP-SLR....seems very great. Also allows you to use Canon batteries to power the monitor (so you only need one type of battery). And they are developing an HDMI splitter that is powered off the monitor.
