Monitoring with my Laptop

Don't forget there is a similar product for MAC, it's called DV Monitor & DV Monitor Pro. These are made by Red lightning software.

No, Adobe CS4 for the Mac includes OnLocation.

enviajador, you connect the HVX200 to your laptop with the 1394 cable. You will not be able to use the 720p N modes because they are not fed through 1394. But everything else will be.

Could this be done on an EX1 or HPX170? How about the HPX300?

And more importantly, how would the quality compare to a normal HD monitor? Would it lag at all and would it be sharp enough to pull focus from?

The HPX170, yes. The HPX300, only when in DVCPRO-HD mode. The EX1, yes-ish. Not for HQ footage. The only thing that comes out of the firewire port of an EX1 is HDV so you'd be monitoring an HDV signal.
