monitoring the output from Odyssey 7Q

Haven't gotten an answer from CD yet, so I thought I'd ask the group.

Are any of you running a director's monitor from the output of the 7Q? I've tried 6 devices now from the HDMI output and the SDI output (using an SDI to HDMI converter). None of the monitors will display the image coming out of the 7Q. At best, I get a couple monitors to say "out of range". I'm assuming the 7Q then simply does a passthrough of the recording signal? I've tried loading 4K clips and the 7Q says it's outputting 1080 422. Both my BMCC and the FS700 (via SDI) will display on 4 of these 6 devices.

It's frustrating. I don't want to buy a $3K plus monitor just to have a decent sized director's monitor.

If any of you are doing this out of the 7Q, can you please chime in?

thanks

I'm sorry that you have not received a response from us yet. Can you please be more specific as to the nature of your issue? What is the signal you are sending into the Odyssey7Q? Are you recording 4K RAW or are you recording ProRes HD via the "4K2HD" mode?

The output of the Odyssey7Q is true Progressive (P) in most modes, as opposed to Progressive Segmented Frames (PSF). Most modern monitors will accept either. We do plan to add in the future the ability to choose either P or PSF for the outputs.

I have had success routing my Kinotehnik EVF through the HDMI out port on the 7Q. (This is in 4K2HD mode) I also use the overlay functionality so I can see the 7Q overlays on my EVF. Helpful for shooting day exteriors without a hood. Before the 7Q , I do remember having to change the video output on the camera itself from 23.98 to 60i so that I could see an image on my EVF as it could only read the 60i signal in S&Q mode) Though I don't think that would affect the 7Q not passing through a signal, especially if the 7Q is getting the RAW signal from SDI port on the Sony.

Hi Mitch, no worries, I know you're all busy. I just thought these guys might have run into this.

Yes, I am capturing 4K RAW at 23.98. The Odyssey says the output is 1080p 23.98 422. Would that be 8bit or 10bit?

I brought the 7Q home and it does work on my 4K 10bit monitor. I'd rather not bring that into the field however. It's expensive and 1080s image doesn't look that great on it.

The output of the BMCC through the SDI>HDMI converter is true progressive as well. If doesn't work on the cheaper monitors, but does work with my 42" TV. The Odyssey output does not, which is why I'm asking this question as there isn't any reason I know of why it shouldn't.

In the end, I want a low cost monitor (23" or bigger) to setup as client/director's monitor. I would like to run it out of the Odyssey, so the image would have the LUT applied (when that feature is fully implemented).

EDIT: lastly, if you're using the 7Q in playback mode, say to review footage, does the SDI output function? In my tests, only the HDMI output works when there is no inputs connected. Can you confirm this Mitch? please and thank you

Can you confirm that you are using the latest firmware? I just tested both the SDI & HDMI outputs on Play mode with no input attached and had no issues.

Not denying your situation, just trying to eliminate possibilities. I know that we did improve some of our HDMI functionality in the last release. HDMI can be incredibly finicky.

I have limited test gear on hand and am trying to see if I can track this one down before Monday when our proper techs can step in with you.

Ok, it definitely seems to be a RAW issue. I plugged the 7Q into my xbox (im at home) and recorded some 720P (the 7Q won't record 1080 at 60p) and that played out to every device. Through HDMI and SDI.

So my question then is, when playing back RAW footage, what is the 7Q actually outputting?

I guess the next test is to record some regular 1080P footage at 23.98 and determine if that outputs properly.

It is outputting 1080p. Not 1080psf or 1080i. And it is doing so at the frame rate the Project setting as set to, which may also be the problem. Some monitors don't like 24fps video. You can always set the camera to one frame rate and the project frame rate to another. It changes the speed at which frames are played back but you will still be recording every frame.

Hi. Are you saying you go camer>7Q>Kinothnik? why not go straight from camera to both devices? One via sdi and one via hdmi? I have yet to test yet myself on FS700, but was having trouble with the dual hdmi loop on a dslr.

Will post here….I am currently trying to go HDMI in to 7q and hdmi out to external monitor for client playback/monitoring. I get audio levels on the way in but no levels or audio on the way out….Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you.

HDMI has a delay at least 3 frames, some colleagues report more than three. Not very suitable for a viewfinder or monitor

We have an issue with audio sometimes not outputting in the current firmware. The imminent firmware update will correct this.

Just confirming for the OP, I viewed 1080 60i footage on my 7Q and sent that out via mini HDMI to a Translogic 5.6" monitor for the run of a show I shot earlier this year.
Image was solid.
