So hopefully in early Jan. i will get my new HVX.
I need a directors monitor, something in the 9" area, just wondering what others are doing?
Are you guys gonna go LCD or CRT?
I prefer CRT because i think the picture is better but i dont want to have to pay 2k, any thoughts?
thanks in advance

Downside is that it's not a field monitor. You need 120/240 AC.

I know guys that use the ac with a heavy duty power block even when they could use a belt. The block lasts all day easy. Can be picked up at most hardware stores.

It's essentally a car battery in a plastic case with a built in converter and charger. Very handy.

If you want to be/have to be shure about picture quality get a CRT. A well know LCD manufacturer in Germany told me on a fare in Munich recently "we just can T beat a good CRT yet..." Granted the small size of the LCD is tempting but shooting in a demanding set up when lighting is essential no chance with a LCD.
However documentary as I do a lot in the field - recently in Banda Aceh among Tsunami victims - I skip the monitor altogether because I know by now what my camera does.
One last advice: if anything sink the money in an excellent post pro monitor . I work with a Barco ADVM 14 impossible to beat. Good luck. Pete

Has anyone ordered from avalive? Their prices are great but I can't find much about them online and that scares me a little.

can i buy this monitor the way it is and be able to feed an hd signal from the HVX and have it work or do you have to buy accersories to make it work?
sorry just a little confused on how this monitor is gonna work with the HVX.

Yes it looks good but using 16:9 it's only 230 lines Horizontal resolution.
This sounds weak to me.

I'm also looking for a decent field monitor between 10 - 17" that won't drain the wallet.

Ahhhhhhh............

I have been investigating further....

The monitor requires modules to be able to use it for HD. Component HD requires a $600 module, SDI HD requires an $1800 module....yikes.

So the cost of this monitor with SDI HD capability is close to $3000. I believe that there must be more attractive options for that price....

I haven't bought from them, nor do I know of anyone who has. However, one of their owners/sales managers crapped in a few threads over at avsforum.com and got into an argument with moderators which escalated into other actions, finally resulting in several discussions having to be temporarily removed from the forums to be cleaned and reinstated. Ugly mess... And the guy(s) from AVALIVE were very unhelpful even in the beginning when users were questioning them on prices, shipping costs, etc.. IMO, they seem a bit flakey/slimey. If nothing else, definitely unprofessional. I would gladly pay a bit more and buy from one of the well known, participating vendors that frequent these forums here.

I just unboxed a Panasonic BT LH1700w I ordered from Rush at EVS. I saw it at the show and had to have one. Yes, a CRT is still unbeatable in picture quality when it comes to setting exposure or color correcting. But, this is 17", flat, has all HD inputs including HD-SDI, will take standard def, has a built in Waveform monitor, and was under $2800.

It also will hold a freeze frame internally and do a side by side with live picture so you can match color, peds, gammas, etc. to a previous set-up or scene. Has the Film gamma setting to match HVX200 and Varicam. Has all the markers, safety zones, etc. This thing rocks as a director's monitor.

Thank you sir, I appreciate your business Jay. True that monitor is absolutely incredible. We put one in rentals so that we can fully experiment with it and make it available for everyone, and it has been a pleasure to work with. :)

We are speaking about studio models? Right?
Apple 30" display has any chance to match colours? Two of them, one for the editing, and the second one for preview and colours.
Is it professional way use them?

Or we still need a third monitor like Panasonic BT LH1700w? My wallett cries!

Apple 15" and 17" Power Book lap tops have very good resolution. If you can get one on eBay or on the seconds market, you can use it to save your p2 cards for editing and also preview them on the monitor at the same time.
If you use 4 GIG cards while someone is changing the lighting or getting ready you can precview the shots taken. With a 2Gig card you can shoot test samples and review them for any lighting changes that are needed.......
Of-course these are for ametures like me trying to do a HD shoot by trial and error....JUST A THOUGHT. 15" is 1440 X 960 and the 17" 1960 X 1050.

I'm also curious as to how the Apple Cinema 23" and 30" will hold up for use as a monitor. They are excellent monitors, but for HD video and color accuracy I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggestions?

The Apple Lap top Power Book has the capacity to connect to either of the 23" and 30" cinema displays. Both of those have close to HD resolution. The color spectrum on both is 6:2:2 close to HD. They are used with appreature to correct color correct photo and should be excellent for edit work and post.

So, whats a good field monitor for the HVX?
I would like one in the 7-10" range, lcd or crt but i prefer crt.
Any suggestions?

Color correction is usually done either in FCP-HD, Avid, or other post programmes.
The Display has to have the capacity of reproducing the color exactly as it is delivered to it. I am told human eye is rated as 6:6:6 in color balance, and HD delivers 6:2:2. So an ultimate monitor will represent color exactly as it is feed delivers. The true representation of color on the monitor is the issue, for one to be able to color correct in the post using different software available to do color correction. As mentioned in the previous post I am still learning, IF WHAT I FIGURED OUT IS WRONG PLEASE CORRECT ME AND EDUCATE ME....thanks in advance.
