Monitor Speaker Recommendations

IMHO, the Japanese manufacturers have never been able to make an accurate audio monitor. Never. Yamaha, Roland? Nahh. You get what you pay for. These are probably decent sounding stereo speakers, definitely not accurate studio monitors.

I figured I'd just lump a noob question in with this thread.

How would I go about setting up my monitors? Ie, cables and all that.
Also, can anyone point me in the right direction for treating an apartment bedroom?

My sound set up certainly not near the complexity others might use. But Im using these - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/321816-REG/Behringer_B2031A_B2031A_Active_2_Way.html#includes

Cant tell you a great deal on a technical perspective. But I can tell you, is that I hear everything quite clearly. Any little audio glitch that needs clean up - I can pick it up. When I get a mix that sounds good from these, it has sounded good on everything else Ive seen it on.

was considering the BX5a's but for the same money, these could be a great value. a little better bass response too.

The Behringers look like a lot for the money, but remember that this is the "fake rolex" of pro audio companies. Almost everything they make is a direct, cheap copy of someone else's product (in this case, the Genelec 1031a). They were (unsuccessfully) sued by Mackie for ripping off their mixing console designs a few years ago, a suit which in my armchair-lawyer opinion, Mackie should easily have won. The boards were nearly identical to the Mackies, and IMO (and many others) were blatant, shameless copies. It was also reported that Behringer used the same Chinese factory to manufacture the boards as Mackie, and that they were apparently complicit in the scam (and obviously, they had all of Mackies tooling and specs). How Mackie lost the lawsuit is beyond me, although it appears they might have had some assistance ($) from a major MI retailer whose name rhymes with "scam cash". Mackie pulled their entire product line from said retailer for a very long time after that (they're back now). For these reasons I personally find Behringer an absolutely abhorrent company. I never have and never will buy anything from them. And I buy a lot of pro audio gear...

I agree with Ted. Back in the day when this all went down, there were a lot of ill feelings toward Behringer. They saved their rears on a technicality. I am with Ted, I will never forget and will never purchase any Behringer products as they totally have ripped off numerous companies. I encourage anyone with an ounce of integrity to do the same.

I live a few miles from both Behringer & Mackie. Greg sold Mackie a few years ago so who knows where it's headed these days. The Behringer stuff I have is OK, not at all great but for the money it's OK. Some of their products have poor tonality, so buyer beware, but overall they're a good value.

I was an early adopter of Mackie products. Back in 72-73 we got one of the first run production units, his new Tapco mixer: 6 channels, it had a volume knob and I believe it had a tone knob per channel. It was an upgrade for us, we had been using Shure's little 6 channel unit and their Vocal Masters were too limited for us. Back then the only decent mixers were custom built units, not Heath kits, but actually they were alright for the money. We built our own (ripoff version) JBL A-7 Voice of the Theatre speaker cabinets for PA: they still sound beautiful if properly set up. A little big for foldback but hey!

About 15 years ago I went to Mackie headquarters to look at their new product line. Inside they had a burnt up 1604 mixer that still worked. The guy stood on top of a new mixer and talked to me! They hired a genius circuit designer for many of their products... overall an impressive company. They had to move production overseas due to labor cost here in the USA.

I have my HR824s and they sound fine for my use. The Behringer Truth speakers sounded pretty bad to my ear. My 2 cents: get what works; something tells me the inside politics of many companies is often questionable, so who really knows who is doing what to who, etc.

Got me a nice set of Behringer MS40 Digital Linear Nearfield Monitors today.
Never heard about the copycat issues they had. It´s a well respected company over here.

The MS40s are active speakers, digital/optical/analog inputs, 40 watt - love them - especialy for under 130 Euros a pair. I´m blown away what they can do for that money today.

I hear things in my recordings I never herard bevore.
Don´t want to watch DVDs or hear music with em thou - they don´t sound pleasing they sound well.... linear.

But hey, that´s why I bought them in the first place.
