Monitor Gamma

Hey guys,

I ran across a website a while ago (can't seem to find it now) that suggested setting the gamma on your computer monitor to around 1.2 for a estimation of how footage will look on a TV (you will most certainly have to lower the brightness setting on your monitor). Anyone have opinions on this? I tried it; it really brings out shadow details though it imparts a really low contrast look. I don't have a production monitor to compare this with so I can't quite tell which is better. Anyone have a production monitor nearby that wouldn't mind testing this sort of crazy thing out?

actually 2.2 would bring it closer to TV standards.
You will also want to properly calibrate your monitor using a spider or other calibrator. YOur monitor may be set to 2.2, but still not be appropriatly adjusted for satisfactory results. But like always, nothing beets a separate NTSC display, or HD monitor for that matter.

Thanks for the reply Scharky. I'll give 2.2 a shot. I do have a monitor which I use but I don't carry it with me between computers. Just want to get my computers monitor as close as possible so I can work on projects on different computers (and of course bring the project into the computer with NTSC monitor for final color grading etc).
