monitor flickering - adjusting shutter speed.

I am new to this entire panasonic 100a scene and just purchased mine last week.  While this is not my intended use I am trying to shoot a training video for a business in using some software I developed having the 100a pointed at the monitor while I discuss how to use the software but I can't get the monitor flickering out.  I have followed the manual setting it on sychro scan and I have tried to set different shutter speeds but the line continues on.  I put it in progressive mode in the scene menu but the line just widens and continues to move on.  I am sure this issue has been discussed ad nauseum but I have searched and can't find anything in the last 120 days.  Can someone help me?  Thanks.  Dave

Re: monitor flickering - adjusting shutter speed.

If you're shooting 60i, set the computer monitor refresh rate to 60hz.

If you're shooting 24P, set the computer monitor refresh rate to 72Hz and use the synchro-scan to dial in a speed that minimizes or eliminates the line. I've had good luck shooting with a shutter of 1/60 on 24P and having it sync with the monitor.

Barry,
Thanks for replying. I did eventually find a response to this type of issue several months ago but they were not able to solve it only because the person had to use an image generator and could not change the refresh rate. I have a similiar obstacle with one computer but may be able to address it on another. I'll see what happens and post the results here. Thanks again for taking the time to respond. Dave

Re: monitor flickering - adjusting shutter speed.

You might try shooting a laptop if you have one available.

Thanks. I'm going to shoot a laptop tomorrow. I'll let you know the results. Dave

Re: monitor flickering - adjusting shutter speed.

The best way is to use camtasia to capture the software but you have to make sure you set your screen rez kind of low so you dont have to go re-sizing the video too much because the text will distort and capture at 30 fps. I found filming the screen will give you a moire pattern on LCDs in 60i. I used this as an effect though that looked cool. http://www.urbanmouse.com/DVXuser/ammi.htm
No music to keep it small.

Re: monitor flickering - adjusting shutter speed.

Interesting video.  I went with the laptop today and I am going to review it on my 53 inch screen tomorrow.  I had to change the white balance and go to a manual iris but it looked good.   I guess I wondered why it was not easier since the manual spoke about sychro scan to solve the problem and I couldn't figure out what specific settings to use... I saw that the canon xl1s had a specific setting to eliminate the rolling horizontal line although the dvx is a much better camcorder overall.  I thought maybe there was some specific tweaking I was missing in the dvx.  If I can't get it done on the laptop then I'll have to try the software solution.  By the way, I love the dvx and I have only had it for a week.  This just seems like it should have been a simple solution but I guess not.

Also, since I am big Adobe fan...I am trained in and have almost everything they put out and a big Total Taining fan which has great videos of on screen training I wanted to produce similiar types of quality for the things I develop.  It might be more than camtasia would provide.  Thanks. Dave

Re: monitor flickering - adjusting shutter speed.

Thanks for the laptop suggestion. Worked like a charm. Everything is crisp and clear with no distortions. THanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate you taking the time. Dave
