Monitor Calibration - SMPTE Color Bar

Does anyone know a good tutorial that teaches step-by-step how to calibrate monitors by using the color bar?
Im finding difficulties because I set the contrast first then the bright... but depending what's the bright level, the contrast level will be different.
Im trying to do it on my PC Monitor. I know there's other ways and software-based calibration, but I want to learn how to do on the universal way.

Ill try to give an example:

You will have to use an SMPTE Color Bar and use chroma level to make it black and white.

bright: 25% ( This is the default setting, I dont have any reference if its right or not )

contrast: 22% ( Okay, it makes that gradient and the left side isnt bright white and right site is dark gray )

bright: 18% ( now, based on the contrast I changed the bright but... if the initial bright is set different like 30%, my contrast would be set to 18%, this is the point that I want to know )

You understand what I mean? Depending the initial brightness you will have a different configuration on final calibration.

What Im doing wrong? Does anyone have a good tutorial about it?

Some tutorials that Ive read:

You'll never get it right on the computer. Computer monitors are just different.

Those levels you set...they're just about what I set mine to, to get it as close as I could.
