MIRRORLESS: Monitor+ app update (iPhone as monitor)

The Monitor+ app now supports a wired connection to an iPhone / iPad and it works really well with the a7Siii - very minimal lag, fast and reliable connection.

I tried using it wirelessly and it was just too unreliable to be useful. This update makes it better than useful. I've got a nicer, bigger, brighter display (iPhone 13) and the layout is better than Sony's. It connects so fast (once paired) that it's actually a lot quicker than turning on an Atomos Shinobi. Then again, you could make a ham sandwich waiting for the Shinobi to turn on.

Shame about the placement of the output* from the camera but I got a right angle cable and it's manageable. Just wish Monitor+ would add edge enhance focus peaking.

I love Monitor+. I love that it has false color and LUT support. I was very happy when I found I could get a wired connection to my Samsung galaxy. But I actually pretty much use it wirelessly now though because I use it mostly on gimbal and would prefer not to tether to camera. The connection is very reliable for me (except in dense interference spaces like a crowded dance floor). There's probably a small amount of extra lag over the wired connection.

Did you try switching the frequency of the wifi output from camera? I forget where you do that, but I believe monitor+ instructed me to do so and it can help the signal cut through better.

Tangentially, I see that Sony has just updated the imaging edge app to the new Creators App. I bet that Monitor+ is still way better, though.

Yes, I tried switching frequency and it didn't fix the problems I was having. Perhaps I'll give it another go in wireless mode as I don't use a gimbal that often but it's actually when the app would be most useful (touch tracking without touching the camera).

I've seen that app and it does look good... but I've been using Adam Wilt's field monitor for years now (for video) and haven't had a need to switch or upgrade. The wireless connection with my two Sony mirrorless' is excellent. On his site, he states that with the A7siii, there's a 3-frame latency (wireless) and I would concur it's nearly real-time.
On certain shoots, I use it in combo with Cascable for stills.

For the best iPhone/iPad monitoring solution, the Accsoon SeeMo can't be beat. There are all the monitoring tools one would expect from a proper field monitor, plus backup recording and live streaming. It performs better than Monitor+ or any other solution I know of.

I'm not sure I've ever disagreed with you, Mitch, on this forum. And I'm sure the SeeMo is great. But it isn't wireless - so you are tethered to the camera. Wireless for my needs is a must (granted they are pretty specific use cases) when I'm using the iPad Pro as a monitor.

It's not clear to me from their website or promo video, but it doesn't look like this can control camera autofocus, can it? Or exposure settings?

It's the remote control aspects, particularly with regard to focus, of Monitor+ that make it so damn useful. Or even Imaging Edge, far inferior as it is.

I took a look at the page for that app to see what kind of control it has over a7siii, fx3, etc. It looks like it can do. But he says midway on the page, "Using a Sony A1, 7C, 7Riv, 7RivA, 7Siii, A9ii, FX3, or newer? You might prefer Monitor+."

Ha. That's hilarious. I've never met nor do I know Adam... but I like him... he's almost too honest. :) I may eventually take a look at that app too.

I agree, the Monitor+ app seems like a great tool for video production. It's awesome that it now supports a wired connection to an iPhone / iPad and works really well with the a7Siii - very minimal lag, fast and reliable connection.

Disappointed to hear that using it wirelessly was unreliable though. This update definitely makes it better. A nicer, bigger, brighter display (iPhone 13) and the layout is better than Sony's sounds very appealing. Connecting so fast (once paired) that it's actually a lot quicker than turning on an Atomos Shinobi is a big plus.

Shame about the placement of the output from the camera but I get it, using a right angle cable seems like a manageable solution. I would love to see edge enhance focus peaking added to Monitor+ though.
