10k equivalent LED fresnel. Runs on 13A / 110v

Am I the only one who thinks this is a pretty big deal? Dare i say a potential game changer for a lot of productions?

I know that cameras are incredible sensitive these days, but there still is a need for a big gun. Power consumption has always been the limiting factor with tungsten or HMI lights of this size, unless you had the money for a generator or were on a stage.

You guys will have to tell me. I mostly use 10K's on stage where power is part of the deal, although it will be nice to keep the heat down (and producers are starting to get the power savings paradigm when they get the bill from the stage). Sometimes I'll have them up on condors at night for streetlight sources.

I would think that a daylight balanced big head that can plug into house power would be a little more exciting for budget productions, as you still have to combat the power of the sun.

Meh. If I was looking to get that quantity of light, I would be looking at the new Hive Wasp 1000. I have three hive wasps and they are the best quality lights I have ever used. Plus it's cheaper than the LED version.

Hive Wasp 1000- $8500
10k equivalent, runs on 9.5A/120v
Completely flicker free up to millions frames/sec
98+ CRI, full spectrum light
Relatively low heat (I can put my hand on my wasp without discomfort after it's been on for an hour)
100,000+ hour bulb life

I can not stress enough how nice the quality of this light is. When we got it we setup two side by side tabletops, one lit with our HMI and one lit with the Hive, and the Hive was noticeably better than the HMI.

I'm not sure about game changer... but I do love the direction these higher output LED's are going. I'm still waiting to pull the trigger on one that's right for me - since I do smaller productions and only occasionally would require that punch of an hmi (at a lower cost and possible ability to run off batts too). The Mole may fit a certain niche... but it ain't mine.
And I'm sort of with Christopher above - the Hive as well as the Punch Plus from AadynTech are quality at lower price point.

I think this light is a huge deal, from the photometrics I've seen it's very close to an Arri M40 in daylight. To get that kind of punch from a light you can plug into a wall (and dim, without colour shift) to whatever level you need? That's remarkable.

Add to that the fact you could run it off a tiny 2kw portable generator, and your night exteriors just got a lot easier to light. This big boy mole, the Hive 1000w unit are both hugely exciting to me. I can't wait to get my hands on them to try.

Interesting. I've been aware of the HIVE lights, but I didn't see this one.

Isn't it? We live in interesting times.

From what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, but HMI is twice the efficiency of tungsten, and plasma is twice the efficiency of HMI. So the Hive 1000 wasp is equivalent to a 2000 HMI...fixtures and beam angle being the same. So a 1000 plasma is equivalent to a 4000 tungsten.

I have to say, I'm really looking forward to experimenting with plasma. The LEDs are also at a great place. Although I believe that Mole Richardson unit is 90 CRI. That's fine if using it as a sun blast through a window or a night time fill, but for skintones I would not be comfortable at 90 CRI. That is why the Plasma units are so appealing to me. Two of these 1K wasps at 98 CRI can take care of a lot of needs in the Indie circuit I'm involved in. Combine those with a 1x2 and a 1x1 Cineo or skypanel LEDs, you can lighiti-light a friggin awesome scene. Flags and silks included, of course :)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always been told that(everything else being equal) HMI's were three to four times the output/efficiency of tungsten.

And like a lot of others, I'm very interested in the 1K Hive lights. Lots of power and (supposedly) full spectrum. The biggest drawback for me right now is that they are PAR's and not open face focusable units. But I'm sure if the demand was there, they could design an open face focusable reflector housing/head or have a system like Bron Kobold: one "head", but a PAR housing and an open face housing and you can swap them out in literally seconds.

I think HMI's actually closer to 4-5 times the efficiency of tungsten. Edit: A 575W HMI has roughly the same output as a 2k Tungsten. (http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=7957&p=60855)
The Hive 1000 is being put forward as having the same output as a 2.5k HMI.

The Wasps that I have are PARs, but they have interchangeable lenses. That being said, I typically use it with the "super-wide" flood lens. Also, since the heat is so low, the lenses are plastic, which means they're light and they don't break if they're dropped!

I don't know about the Hive 1K, but with the standard Hive wasps, you can actually put an ellipsoidal barrel on it. Talk about being able to focus and control light...
