moiré pattern problems

I just got my D90 and was doing some testing with it. I noticed a really bad moiré pattern on brick buildings. I gotta get a handle on this because if bricks are causing moiré, what will a checkered dress or suit-jacket do?
This has probably been addressed already but I can't find it if it has. Any ideas guys?

yup just another one of the things that you have to avoid:thumbsup:.
Any pattern has potential for it. I just am careful to keep patterns out of focus somewhat in the composition.

just use the stair-step to fix it.

huh what ?
As far as I have seen and tested, the stair-step fix doesnt even come close to solving moiré patterns.
Sure it adds ... well interps and adds the missing lines that clean up the main jaggies but a shot of a brick wall that has detail inside the 8 lines of resolution will not be fixed at all by the stepper fix.
At least by the AE and Vdub scripts I tried .

then you haven't been looking or you don't knwo what a moiree pattern is. :-) yeah, it has a lot of moirees because in video mode it samples the image at a much lower res than the optical low pass filter. since its most annoying manifest is chroma aliasing i usually use secondary color correction to get rid of (some of) it. other than that the only option i see (except blurring) is to use a "super resolution upscaler", which actually works better the more aliasing there is. i haven't tried it but i'm planning to.

yeah, the stairstep removal algorithm takes care of some of the moiree, but only that caused by dropping every 10th line, not the aliasing casued by the lines already lost at the sensor.

Can you elaborate on this "super resolution upscaler"? How is it that color correction helps? Are you just pulling out saturation?
I've seen moiré on studio cameras before but it's usually slight. This is probably the worst I've ever seen, whole sides of buildings are going crazy. I live in Pennsylvania and everything here is made of brick so I'll definitely need to find a workable solution.

Can you elaborate on this "super resolution upscaler"?
basically it uses motion tracking to find blocks in the image that were shifted a subpixel distance in previous frames and fills in the in-between pixels using that. google it. i've tried "video enhancer" and it seems to work ok, though not great. i might write my own. :-)
How is it that color correction helps? Are you just pulling out saturation?
if the moiree is purple, which it often is, i just add green, and optionally remove some saturation. set the keyer to select only the very saturated purple pixels and add no feather or choke.

btw it's often purple because that's a color that seldom contains any detail in normal video, same with cyan, the other color that often pops up. most scenes are predominantly gray, green, or yellow. not even pure blue and red are very common actually.
