Modula Baby MKII - RAW, 10bit, 4:4:4, 2K, $6,000 - WOW!

Always good to keep an eye on these cameras in case a price/performance advantage arises which would bring them into contention for some peoples projects. In 2006 I was RAM-recording Bayer video to a laptop, experimenting with some Sumix camera heads. Today I like the big sensor portability of DSLRs for my current film project, though kind've miss being able to set not only my own frame size but also frame shape, and using my Schnieder and Angeniuex C-mount lenses.

Global-shutter CMOS has been out for years, but only in industrial cameras. What, you don't keep up with industrial cameras? ;)
Ha! Well yeah, that’s what I meant: a viable technology for filmmakers. :P

I'm not sure what advantage a global-shutter CMOS has over CCD, at least this particular CMOS chip.

1. Global-shutter CMOS and CCD seem to have the same dynamic range (10 or 11 stops)
2. CCDs can bloom while CMOS is immune, but Ikonoskop footage, for example, shows that CCDs really have this under control these days.
3. CMOS seems to entertain higher frame rates, but not in this particular sensor (max 60 fps)
4. CMOS seems to use less electricity. OK, so there's an advantage.
5. CMOS is cheaper and easier for a camera maker to work with. OK, so there's an advantage that might translate in lower price.

There are others who prefer CCD, saying it makes a more natural image. I don't see how, though, based on what I know about image sensors (which is not everything, I must say).
Everything you listed with the exception of 1 and 3 is an actual advantage. (Blooming “under control” ≠ no blooming). But even with 3, 60 fps is more than enough for 1080p, especially at 4:4:4. What other cameras do you see doing better in this price bracket?

For anyone still curious about the pricing:

List price: €7,500 (At current exchange rate: USD $9,917.36)
Quoted prices: €5,999 or USD $7,899

This includes a Camera Control Unit (CCU) which operates the camera and has onboard demosaicking.

So, not quite the $6K as reported, but you’re still getting a lot for under $10K.

Thanks for publishing the price. I emailed them weeks ago, and they never responded.

I had the same problem initially. I had submitted via the question/comment form and heard nothing for weeks, so I tried the quote form instead and they got back to me the very next day. I then asked for more information and it took them another week to respond. But I take it this is a small company and it says on their homepage that they were also at NAB, so these easily could have been factors.

I am just about ready to pull the trigger with one of these, but I get the impression that global shutter CMOS will be on the prosumer market soon enough with more features for cheaper and I’ll regret it. But considering I’m due for an upgrade and literally every other interchangeable lens camera in production right now is rolling shutter, it could be a great hold-me-over until a BMCC 2 comes out…

Don’t want CCD either, to avoid vertical streaking. The Modula Baby MkII has global shutter CMOS, which is perfect. Just meant that it may be a little early to invest in the technology. Though that’s never really stopped me before… :P

Hi Guys, my name is Christian and I am a technical staff of the company "Easylooksystem". Sorry for the delayed reply emails. We work on it:-)

Now it´s time to introduce the Highspeed CCU with up to 340 frames/second via 16 GB ringbuffer. At this moment, the ccu is more a demonstrator (30x20x6 cm), but we´ll shrink the layout the next weeks.

Here´s the first clip with 250 fps. The dot-artifacts resulting from a poorly shielded cable from the camera head to the ccu. I noticed this too late, but I would not throw away the shots.

Incredible shots here!

IndieCam and IO Industries make similar cameras. Essentially taking an industrial camera and putting an SDI connection on it.

The Adimec Sapphire industrial camera will be amazing. Using the Vita25k 25MP (5k) full frame sensor at 32fps, the bottleneck seems to be the connector (camera link deca), supposedly the sensor can do 53fps at full resolution. Oh, and its global shutter.

I'll be the first person to buy one of these, if I could understand the workflow a little better.

Just off that? Your a bit more brazen with your funds than I. It looked ok to me, but no where near enough info to even consider making a purchasing decision. But hey, if you have the dough, and can afford to make decisions based on a little info, then more power to you. I only wish I had that kind of money.
