Modula Baby MKII - RAW, 10bit, 4:4:4, 2K, $6,000 - WOW!

If news of this camera is old news, then I apologize for this repost. This camera sounds like serious competition for the Ikonoskop and Digital Bolex. All the stats are great, but I'm not sure if it has any audio inputs. I'm not sure if this is a Cinema DNG workflow or not either. I wonder if this company, EasyLook, will be at NAB 2012 Vegas.

The specs are on their website. I have no idea if they will be at NAB or not.

I saw the price $6,000 at the bottom of this post about the Alexa-M

ok, so now EVERYBODY is doing it...
how long till someone makes one of these RAW cameras using the sony 16mpix APS-C sensor?

Competition is a good thing. News of this EasyLook System should be devastating for the digital bolex people, if the $6,000 price tag is a reality. I just hope that it's $6,000 USD and not Euros. The footage online looks very clean. Obviously it's not overly creative, but I can see it's potential for sure. I just hope that they talk about the audio situation. Does it have audio inputs or timecode? I'll be the first person to buy one of these, if I could understand the workflow a little better.

1) Similar price point.
2) Easy Look is a proven company with years of delivery, manufacturing and support of products being used in the market right now.
3) Easy Look has options for RAW or compressed formats, making it more versatile.
4) (Possibility) The unit looks like it's coming to market sooner.
5) Digital Bolex seems to still be in the prototype stage and it looks like everyone that has paid for one, will be one big group of beta-testers. Who knows how long its going to take an unproven company to work out any technical issues. It took RED a few stages to work out the RED ONE before it became more reliable and they had deeper pockets.

Well, since it looks like EasyLook is using the CMOSIS CMV2000 for the Modula BABY MKII, maybe it would use the CMV12000 for an APS-C 4K camera. Keep in mind that it's a 500-1,000€ sensor. It does, however, have similar specs (other than being 4K) -- global shutter and about 10 stops of dynamic range (~15 stops in HDR mode).

But the Digital Bolex is half the price and has things this does not, like XLR inputs, a screen, and onboard recording. "Devastating" is too strong a word. "Tangentially competitive," maybe?

they're definitely similar products, but $3500 vs $6000 makes the D-Bolex guys pretty safe from this
if anything, it's the Modula Baby MKII that would have received the D-Bolex as very bad news

The baby Mk2 is 6000 dollar and not the alexa M correct me please if I'm wrong If the alexa is 6000 then I will run naked over the street...

this camera has been out for a while now, under the radar though. I have yet to see any really impressive footage though

I have never seen a price quote for the Alexa M. The Easy Look Modula Baby MKII price quote just happened to be at the bottom of the Alexa M review on that page. Sorry for any confusion, I thought that the article was pretty clear.

I have sent a direct email to EasyLook asking about the XLR inputs and a price quote in US Dollars for the American Market. Everything that I see from this camera is "potential" only. Until there is more information, you are right, I shouldn't use the word "devastating." I will say, that the EasyLook Modula MKII is "potentially competitive" until I have more information. As soon as they email me back, I will re-post.

This would be an amazing documentary camera, simply because it can also be used to run & gun, since it has a global shutter.

I should also mention that if it is indeed using the CMOSIS CMV2000, it should be capable of shooting 1920x1080p at 330fps, 10bit.

If its picture is any good than it can be bad news for Si2K or Ikonoscope 2/3 cameras

Neat little camera head for different applications like pole cam, car mounts or 3D, but it is in no way in any competition with the various ventures building raw digital cinema cameras with sound, monitoring and onboard recording. All that would need to be added in a worse frankenrig than we see on dslr's.

Oh good, another Frankenrig camera, that's a brilliant idea.

They should also make it so it only works tethered to a big RAID array, that'd be even better.

-.-

Woah, really? I figured global shutter CMOS as a viable technology was still a long ways off. If it really is $6K that’s not bad at all for what you’re getting. Sure, it won’t be nearly as polished or fully-featured as a normal camcorder in the same price range, but with that kind of resolving power and no CCD OR rolling shutter artifacts, I’d consider it an early-adopter fee.

A user on a French forum asked for a quote and got 5,000 Euros. Currently, that comes out to 6,572.11 USD. Although it’s possible they’d use a loose conversion and it would turn out lower.

Hope mik303 hears more before my Bolex pledge goes through…

Global-shutter CMOS has been out for years, but only in industrial cameras. What, you don't keep up with industrial cameras? ;)

I'm not sure what advantage a global-shutter CMOS has over CCD, at least this particular CMOS chip.

1. Global-shutter CMOS and CCD seem to have the same dynamic range (10 or 11 stops)
2. CCDs can bloom while CMOS is immune, but Ikonoskop footage, for example, shows that CCDs really have this under control these days.
3. CMOS seems to entertain higher frame rates, but not in this particular sensor (max 60 fps)
4. CMOS seems to use less electricity. OK, so there's an advantage.
5. CMOS is cheaper and easier for a camera maker to work with. OK, so there's an advantage that might translate in lower price.

There are others who prefer CCD, saying it makes a more natural image. I don't see how, though, based on what I know about image sensors (which is not everything, I must say).
