Mmm, fabric grids.

I haven't shot much non-product stuff in ages, but last night I shot a senior portrait of a friend's kid; and my wife needed a bio-shot for her yoga business so I shot her while I had all the gear out.

I've been using fabric grids with no fill for moody people shots; I used one on a large photoflex with a fill card for these shots; still love that look, and I love how you get so little spill on the background. You can lose close to 2 stops just by angling the softbox, which is great (since my pack with dial-down is in the shop!)

For the color shot of the teen: that subtle blur-look that wraps around him and softens the background is all done in-camera; no photoshop on either of these. It's a cool look, kinda subtle, and requires shooting at 1/4 second or so with a tripod. Kind of like those old "turbo filters", but no fussy gear required except strobes and a tungsten light.

Gear notes on these: Speedotron packs, large softbox key, 11" reflector with 11" grid for hair (with about 6 layers of black mesh wadded around it), 6.5" tungsten fresnel for the background. Nikon D-80 with Nikon 85mm 1.8 lens. Shot around F4.
