GH2 MMA training footage I shot

I train MMA and I decided to bring my Gh2 just to shoot some footage of us training. I did this hand held because I forgot to bring my tripod. I just got my Gh2 and my friend hacked it with the Vitaly hack.

I know for film, you want to use the 24h film mode. But for shooting documentary footage, this doesn't seem to produce good results for me. It needs to be smoother. I had my camera set on Shutter Speed 50, ISO 640, Aperture 5.6, on a Nikon 24mm Lens (I have an adapter). At higher shutter speeds, the footage became incredibly jagged and "aliased" I believe is the phrase. I didn't have time to fiddle with all the settings when I was there (I had to train too).

Should I be using a different film mode? Here are two shots I uploaded to You Tube. If this needs to be in another thread (and not by itself) please let me know. I don't post here often but I try to read all the stickies. I will also take any suggestions and shoot new footage with the new settings and post it here.

I just shot some footage in my house at 720/60 and it looks amazing, although it seems like there is more "noise" in it. I will keep working with it and shoot some more training footage this weekend.

I take it "HBR" is High Bit Rate?

Let me first say that I am a HUGE MMA fan. I have and never will compete in it because at 6’4”, 165 lbs, and a minus reach advantage I wouldn’t last long in a cage. However, I watch it every chance I get.

Your video is way underexposed. What mode did you shoot in? Full Manual? Try shooting in Shutter Priority with Auto ISO. Shooting full manual will mess up more than it helps if you are still learning the camera. Also shoot wide open at the largest aperture your lens will allow.

Definitely try 720p @ 60 FPS. However, you must use a shutter speed between 1/60[SUP]th[/SUP] and 1/120[SUP]th[/SUP] in that mode. Try to use 1/120[SUP]th[/SUP] as much as you can with 720p. However, you can get flickering issues with some indoor lights at 1/120[SUP]th[/SUP] and faster. If that is the case then just start slowing the shutter down in increments until the flickering stops.

Also try the mode labeled HBR. It is 1080p @ 30 FPS. However, you must use 1/60[SUP]th[/SUP] of a second shutter with that mode and not the 1/40[SUP]th[/SUP] of a second that blazer003 mentioned. 1/40[SUP]th[/SUP] is way too slow for 30 or 60 FPS.

I would love to see more of the MMA videos. Try interviewing some of the fighters and do some videos of their other works and not just them fighting. It is neat to see these athletes doing all of their activities.

Also mix in some still shots that can really freeze the action at critical moments. That would be cool.

Here are some GH2 videos that might help you in setting the camera up.

Rolling shutter makes fast motion objects look unnatural. Its the nature of the machine. Try and choose camera angles that have motion coming towards them or away, and less side on shots. Also get creative with you angles, use a crane for overheads, demonstrating techniques like armbars as we have a better 2D brain than 3D. Don't pan or go hand held. I've used the Gh2 for capturing Jujitsu and it was fine as long as I keep the subject in small in the screen. You can go in a film details that are vital later. Submissions 101 demo technique from two angles because they have a static cam. You should really have no preferred position as every technique is unique and should be capture at what ever angle is best.
