I am looking to purchase a new DSLR that shoots video. I have narrowed my search to GH1 and the Mark II. The camera will be used for video purposes. Which way should I roll with?

Check out this 5D2 vs GH1 comparison posted to VIMEO today:

You have to ask your self just what are you going to viewing these clips on ? Remember that the ultimate destination of the clip could be a 50" Plasma TV or OLED TV (Panasonic have promised an OLED TV by the end of next year).

I just loaded both of these clips in to a Beyonwiz DP-P2 PVR/Media player and connected (via HDMI) to a Panasonic 50" PZ850 series Plasma, and viewed @ 2metres.

Canon 5D2 - nothing to report, absolutely rock solid, no artifacts any where in the picture - looks like a DSLR still shot.

Panasonic GH1... oh boy.. where do I start...
GH1: 0:0 to 0:12 - very noticeable sharpening contours in the sky - this is the low light 'mud' effect every one is talking about. Lots, and I mean lots, of dancing block artifacts in the sky. It doesnt' look good at all.

Lots of dancing blocks in the red areas of the Arizona can at both infinity and close focus. My not-the-slightest-bit-interested better half can see this.

It would seem you get what you pay for.

I for one, would not be happy with the GH1 - The compression artifacts and contouring just looks plain bad.

The GH1 might be ok for viewing on small monitors, but it is bound to look very bad on a 100" projector screen.

I didn't think there was a lot in it, the GH1 certainly stood up fairly well against the 5D2, more compression yes, but really pretty good over all.

THe GH1 has vertical steaks / banding at all ISOs and light levels.

Read this entire thread, and be shocked.

Ie, avoid.

Yep, it looks like it is not the ideal choice for low light, but in normal lighting conditions it is a great little camera, the fact that it can auto focus during filming and can shoot 60p for slow motion shots and has an articulating screen has the 5DmkII beat in a few departments.

Yes the gh1 may very well have the 5d beat in a couple departments but as we are finding out, image quality is cetainly not one of them

Yeah, right. The GH1 image is pretty nice and with all the extras this one is a no brainer.

Between the image quality, the apps that allow it to pull down to 24fps, the lens options, and the low light capability, Ive found the MKII is a superior camera, though a much more expensive one.
