MKH-416 vs. MKH-70

Same family, but they sound just a tiny different from each other.

The 416 is a good all-around microphone, both INT and EXT, quiet/noisy environments. Very immune from humidty and harsh environments.

The 70 is mainly used to pickup dialogue and other sounds from some distance. For example, you shoot on the beach and the shots for the entire day would not allow you to bring your booms closer nor hide any wireless due to wardrobe, then you bring this out. Don't want to get too much of the waves, bring it out. Wide shots to pickup dialogue, bring it out again. One thing that you need to make sure is to use a good boom operator for this. The angle of directivity is very narrow, so pointing the microphone at the sources is crucial.

Will someone tell me how good the MKH-416 pair against the MKH-70?

They are different families of microphones and are quite different in sound and polar-pattern.

The MKH 416 is the old family of RF condensers and was launched in about 1975. It is a short gun mic.

The MKH 70 is from the new family of symmetrical capsule RF condenser mics and is about 12 years younger. It is a long gun mic. (but not as long as the old 816).

The MKH 70 is a far better mic. in that it has a lower self-noise figure and vastly lower distortion figures, especially in IM-distortion; it is also more neutral.

The equivalent of the 416 in the new family of symmetrical capsule condensers is the MKH 60 - in theory the MKH 60 has the same polar-pattern as the 416 but, being a more modern design, has less off-axis colouration than the old 416.

In comparison to the MKH 60 (and 70) the 416 sounds low output and noisy. Going from a 416 to a 60 or 70 can be a little difficult if you are used to the 416, but if you use the 60 or 70 for a while you don't normally want to go back to the 416 as you then hear its deficiencies.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for both of your help. I've purchased a MKH 70 but the seller (I believed) intentionally sent me the MKH 416. The seller won't take it back. I really hope my credit card can do a chargeback.

If he won't take it back that's fraud and the card should definitely do a chargeback.

You should also tell him that he has to pay for return carriage and that you will have it waiting for him to arrange collection.

Thanks for the response. I just sent the mic last night. I didn't even ask for the carriage cost. All I asked him is to refund my original cost.

I have been eyeing the MKH-70 for sometime. I know that BH cost around $1700 and another retailer is selling for $1400. This seller is selling a used for $1,000. But unfortunately, he switched the product and claimed that it is the MKH-70.
