MKH 416 Construction

Hello,

I need to record ambient noise for a short movie and I use the Sennheiser MKH 416. I want to use the XY coincident setup, but I don't know where MKH416's diafragm is located. Any other setup you may recomend?
Please anyone can help me?
Thanks,
Marco.

The diaphragm in shotguns is at the base of the interferrence tube... just below the last "vents" on the tube.

That's a good question though because I had a 416 and it does seem like the diaphragm is at the tip... something about the look of it. Still... it's the interference tube that makes it a shotgun. If the diaphragm was at the tip then it would be a hyper or a cardioid.

Thanks Matin, would you recomend other setup for ambien recording, indoor or outdoor?

Marco for stereo ambience I'd use a pair of hypers... or possibly cardioids. From there it just depends on your budget.

Cardioids will hear less to the rear and a wider swath out front... hypers will have narrower pickup and hear just a bit to the rear. With a stereo pair you can experiment a lot with positioning and get what you want with either pair though.

It's actually amazing what a sense of space you can get with even a cheap, but decent pair... for stereo tricks I use... well... do I really have to say it? Starts with an "O".

I would use shotguns because it's what I have now. I don't know how it would sound, my first guess is, a naroow stereo. I'll truy to buy other mics, hyper or cardioid and experiment using other stereo configurations. Thank you for your advices.
