MK ii firmware questions

I was in this heated discussion with a friend whilst deciding which cam would be a better investment for video, the 5D or 7D

He claims 7D because of the obvious variable framerates
I'm a fan of FF and so stuck with the 5D and talked about the "potential" firmware update that would allow for variable framerates (not holding my breath though)

Then it just hit me...

Now let's assume that Canon recognizes the IMMENSE amount of filmmakers eager to get their hands on a 24p video DSLR....and they have the 7D coming out

The main target for these SLR is just that, still photographers...Video is a just an added bonus really. And the still market is satisfied I'd say.

Now there's a second market that's more interested in this new bonus feature (filmmakers), and they're buying up 5D's like crazy just for that. With a new product like the 7D coming out, if I were in charge of Canon I would never allow a firmware update for the 5D which would cripple the launch sale numbers of the smaller sensor 7D.

- Would anyone buy (price tag aside) a 7D over a 24p MKii?

- Do you think that Canon is just holding back on releasing a firmware until they have enough 7D's sold?

The 5D and 7D are at different price points, but at this point in time because Canon have spent so much on marketing and launching the new product it is probably more important for Canon to shift more 7Ds then they do 5Ds.

Canon have to do their sums I guess.

They need to do some market research and guess how many people will buy the 7D if it was the only EOS with 24p.

The question is: do they lose either way. If I buy a 5D or a 7D it's still money in Canon's back pocket isn't it? May as well have 2 attractive options, rather than just one attractive option.

Personally speaking, I agree with your friend. the 5D because of it's FF is still the most attractive option for me.

Canon will not release a 24p firmware update for the 5Dii, maybe the 5diii. 5dii is jello city so for my purposes no, I'd take a 7D over a 5dii (24p if they made it).

Heck yea they are holding back and will continue to even after the 7d is released, they will make you buy the 5diii to get 24p in a full frame camera.
