Mixpre "shelf" - a DIY setup...thoughts?

I posted this on the Audio thread, but got only one response, so I'm cross posting it here.

I had a local fabricator build me a design in aluminum for my mixpre, since it's such a pain to figure out how to best mount it, and mounted it with the lightstand leg mount that was brought up in another post some time back. (Leg mount available from the Guitar Center in Seattle for one.) I was able to also mount my Zoom H4N on a short riser and put it right in my fingertips. I hold the Mixpre in with two lips on each end and a piece of Velcro underneath the Mixpre to allow it to grip the bottom of the 'shelf'.

I think this is going to be great for run and gun to hold both devices, and also allow me to run longer XLRs out to my Tascam or other higher end recorder.

The cost to fabricate quantity one was $50. But I think that we could get it done for less if we did a quantity order, if people were interested.

Does this look interesting? What would it be worth, complete with leg mount?

I've added holes in the top and bottom, to be able to mount stuff, like the Zoom.

I'll try and post a video later, but I'm busy this week.

Or feel free to build your own, if you have the skills.

im working on a shoulder rig myself. im finding out that the more adaptable to more things, the better off you'll be...

My MixPre mounting solution :

Why do you want to fix a MixPre on to a tripod? Can you just leave it (along with H4n if needed) in a mixer bag and hang the bag on the tripod? Alternatively, just like many items can be clamped on to a sturdy studio tripod, can you clamp your MixPre down on, say, a tripod leg? BTW, I don't quite understand what/how you did that, but if it requires physically modifying a tripod system, I guess most would not like that, as a video pod system can be much more expensive than a MixPre.

MixPre is already obsolete. Its replacement MixPre-D comes with an optional shoe mount.

Obsolete is an opinion. There is nothing wrong with it, other than a mount bracket. For the last year i've had it on a bag. This is much better.look closely, this is mounted on a tripod leg.it mounts on a tripod leg mount. Very fast setup.

a bit clearer thoughts on the last post

I should probably have been more clear. I am using a tripod leg clamp, from the Guitar Center. It clamps onto the tripod, Then i tighten a wingnut to clamp the 'shelf' to the leg clamp. That takes seconds to mount. then the mixpre (and Zoom H4n) is set. I can then strike the Tripod w/o unclamping the shelf if i want. I don't use a rail system, so the pictured system (while nice) wouldn't work for my setup. I've tried using the bag, but there really is no good place to hang it without it being in the way. I have a slight design mod I'm going to do, but for much of my stuff, this works, for both DSLR and for camcorder. For run and gun, I don't use it at all.

I don't consider the Mixpre "obsolete". Obsolete is a VHS camcorder. But the Mixpre works fine. It just doesn't have a USB port, which I don't need anyway. Not worth selling my unit for that feature, along with the mount that it comes with. That's just an economical thing to do.
