The Fostex FR2-LE is now back in stock and I have one on order. So, what it the best way of hooking it up to my MixPre-D?

I've got the Tape Out of the MixPre-D feeding the 1/4" ins on the FR2-LE. Works beautifully. 1/8" TRS > dual 1/4" TS Y-cable is all you need.

You'll also need a 1/8" TRS>1/8"TRS cable to take the FR2-LE's headphone out back to the MixPre-D's monitor return. (Or better, use a dual RCA>1/8" to take the FR2-LE's monitor outs.)

sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but i've wondered, how much better is this combo(mixpre-d with fr2le) than just fr2le?

yah.... I was wondering also.... the specs on the fr2le is already very good... just behind the Sound Devices.... isn't using the mixpre-D as well a bit of overkill?

The SD preamps are better, even though the recorder's preamps are pretty good.
Taking the phantom power burden off the recorder extends battery life.
Level control and signal routing are much easier using the mixer in front.
The recorder's bag-viewable meter is kind of lousy, really, so the SD's meter is much more handy to have at a glance.
The SD's "unclippable" limiters are better than anything the recorder can offer.
The FR-2LE has a notoriously noisy headphone preamp, and the mixer has clean monitoring (which is why I suggest taking the recorder's RCA Monitor outputs to the return).
