Mixing Z1 with Hd100

I was wondering if anyone here has ever done a multicam shoot using a z1 and hd100. I know the two cameras are the opposites of each other but I also know alot can be done in post and each camera has alot of tweakablity.

The reason for getting a z1 would be for it's auto features and low light quality.

I already have an hd100 so basically this decision would determine if I get another hd100 or a z1.

Your opinions would be much appreciated! :)

Well, i wouldn't say the two cameras are the opposite of each other. I mean, they are both HDV cameras. Just different flavors.

I would buy another HD100 if I were you, however, and keep it all progressive.

This is going to be a tough call for me because I rather have a second hd100 then a new z1. However, it may be handy for me to have a z1 becuase it has noob features and I unfortunetly have noob operaters that help me. I just don't know if I could teach these people how to properly use manual focus.

The deciding question is: Can I make z1 footage look like hd100 footage(progressive)?

I think you can. Except from learning the Z1, you should do some tests to find the settings that will give you a closer match during shooting (unprocessed) under different situations, to minimize the effort in post.
Make sure you shoot with Z1 in pal mode (50i), then use the best deinterlacer you can find to convert to 25p and then slow down to 24p, resampling the audio track.
I think you should avoid very different gamma curves on each camera especially with much color saturation and perhaps it's better to shoot linear with both, just do some testing to find out.

I wonder if there would be any sound issues due to the different frame rates. I looked at the cineform website and it said it could take the 60i and convert it to 30p. I guess the software corrects the audio as well but I wonder if it would still match the 30fps footage coming out of the hd100.

Any thoughts on this?

If you want to convert 60i to 30p you don't have to convert audio at all, the timing is exactly the same (2 fields(i)=1 frame(p) like 50i to 25p). You only need to change audio duration if you slow down from 50i/25p to 24. Other conversions like 30/60-24, or 50-30 are possible but should be avoided mostly for video issues.

You can use an external audio editor like Adobe Audition 2 or the low cost GoldWave (Windows) with excellent results and no problems at all.
