Mixing settings....

I know that we shouldn't mix 24p with 60i or 30p or whatever but what about mixing the settings--Like adjusting the master pedastal or gamma. Would that effect the quality or look of the film if you use different settings for stylistic reasons. I was thinking of doing a horror short which would be shot with the "Drama" settings and then doing flashbacks in the "Man on Fire" settings. Film has used filters and tricks to do the same thing for years. But I honestly don't see this much in indies shot on DV. What do you guys think?

sure you can, as long as you do it in a coherent way (like all flashbacks the same way, etc).
but always consider the option of doing that manipulation in post, rather than while shooting. this way you'll keep more options when editing.

sparxscorsesse,

You are completely on the right track! Directors should be collaborating with their DP's to ensure that everything camera and lighting-wise is contributing to the story. It's completely legitimate to adjust gamma, color, detail, exposure, white balance, etc. to fit certain moods in the film. Same goes for tightness of composition, camera movements, tripod vs handheld/stedicam, etc. A film where everything is shot exactly the same, even if it all technically looks good, would be a boring film indeed.
