mixing formats

Hey. I accidently made some of my files 'aic' files and the rest are prores 422, will they mix well in fcp and then to dvd?

It sounds like you already know proress typically looks much better than aic.

If your encoding to DVD, the quality difference should be much less noticeable.

The ability to mix in fcp w/o degradation will depend on the specs of the aic's settings. I haven't attempted to mix the two recently, but I've seen fcp butcher image quality if mixing requires a render of the odd clip.

I'd test it out and see if its giving you trouble. It might be less of a pain to convert the aic up to prores. If you go that route, your at least guaranteed fcp will treat all the clips the same in the sequence. You'll just be stuck with the initial quality of the aic.

So, I can take the AIC (Quicktime) and make them "Prores" without any quality issues or changes? I saved the original files on a dvd, but everytime I try to transcode them in voltaic, it quits on me, I do not know why either...

Have you tried copying the original files to your hard drive and then transcoding them? Also, if you are working in FCP with ProRes , then you can just use log and capture instead of going via Voltaic.

I would like to extend this conversation to ask people on the PC the best way to mix GH1 formats if you have a combo of 1080 24p and 72060p footage (and you have to mix... and sometimes you do need slo mo from the 720 60p)
