mixing dv and HD

I have a job comeing up where my client wants a few time lapses of his event and also allot of the event covered. I do not want to waste p2 so is there a way I could shoot the lapses on tape and then use all the other stuff with p2 720p. Will it be that noticable for a client who doesnt know anything about video?

I have 1 32gb and 1 16gb. shooting 720p/24p. I dont have access to any offloading station. So Iv only got the two cards. My plan was to maybe shoot the full 16gb card then switch to tape shoot some fast motion/time lapse shots and then later on fill up the 32gb card. I have to end with a 2 hour product. I am looking into renting a card but I dont want to loose money renting if I could cheat it by shooting DV.

An uprezzed SD timelapse will be pretty mediocre compared to the crisp HD footage from the HVX side by side (depends on how long the finished timelapse is though I suppose)

I'd vote for renting a firestore to be honest :)

keep in mind this guy doesnt know the first thing about video or formats. If you would strongly not recomend using mini dv tapes as well then I will settle for renting a card or two.

how long do these time lapses need to be? if they don't need to be very long, they wont take up much space on your p2 cards.

Usually people suggest using a dSLR for time lapse. That way you're only leaving $1000 unattended instead of $7000, plus you get higher resolution, so you can crop, zoom, and digitally pan in post.

Leave it? Like Hell! I'll pitch a tent and bring out the dogs!

ha exactly. The time lapses will only be about 10 minutes each. and a few of them. But I am already pushing my p2 as it is. I have 2 hours and 10 minutes to make a 2 hour production. I usualy like to shoot much more then the final product.

If you are shooting in time lapse mode for only 10 minutes, you will find it makes no
real dent on your remaining p2 time. I have often been down to the last minute of p2, then started shooting time lapses to make it go as far as possible. Shoot 1 frame per second for 10 minutes, thats only 600 frames, or same as a 20 second clip at 30fps.
If you really want to conserve time, shoot a frame every 5 seconds.
