Mixing and matching rod support accessories

Is it possible to match rod accessories with little to no problems? I'm curious if the spacing between the rods are the same between manufacturers. Say I got the shoot 35 baseplate and rods, but liked the shape lens support. Will they match?

Know that in addition to 15mm rods, there are 19mm rods, besides 15mm LWS(light weight support), there is also 15mm studio spacing and 19mm studio spacing. The studio spacing and 19mm rods are for heavy duty Cine lenses and accessories like studio matte boxes and studio follow focus systems. But, as the above post made clear, 15mm LWS should be the same between reputable manufacturers.

A suggestion for rods. Buy the ones that are threaded so you can get extensions should you need them. (future proof your rig)

Any big difference in the rod material? Since this thread is active. Carbon, stainless, etc Which is better in your opinions and why?

Carbons are my favourite. Super light. Also, keep in mind that not all threaded rods fit on other brands. If you are going the threaded route, get from a reputable company.

I was thinking of going the carbon route. Since I haven't used them, I was thinking of getting them based on weight and to be honest, I'd prefer the dark look. The carbons are plenty rigid?

Totally, amazingly strong!

Carbons wont be threaded.

Steel are the strongest, aluminium the weakest.

All will work

I like heavy for inertia in camera movement. I have aluminium threadeds out of a Zacuto base and I have carbons on my top mount.

Good point about the Carbons not being threaded. Thats OK for me as I bought a few different lengths. For threaded ones I have the Chroziels and they are machined very well.

What length would you recommend for the AF100 for just lens support and possibly a FF? 10" or so?

The smallest I would go is 12". It also depends on weather you will be using it on the shoulder in a linear setup, or weather you will be offsetting. For offsetting 12" under the camera and then attached to a shoulder brace. For linear setup, 18". Just my recommendations.

12" rods are what I've used for just a standard tripod setup. If you're going shoulder mount though I'd definitely go 18" so you've got space for counter weights. And personally, for heavier systems like this I like stainless. Things just seem to slide better on them when you've got multiple clamps on them as opposed to carbon fiber.

EDIT: bgundu beat me to it!
