Mixing 720p with 30p imagery, is it okay?

Hi everyone,

i have a question that I know maybe should be answered by just testing it myself but maybe someone else has tried this and has experienced what Im trying to do. I want to shoot slomo with the p2 in 720p HD in overcranked state (40fps) for my slomo effect and cut that with 30p video footage - this will be in regular speed. Is it very noticable cutting between the two? Does 720p compressed lose the clean slomo effect? The final output of the video will be DV.

Many thanks and Happy thoughts.

do you mean 720p at 40fps v 1080p at 30fps? If so there is a drop in quality...I'm sure some would argue that it is a very obvious drop in quality....I've used slomo footage in my 1080p project and it blows up very well...as your final output is standard definition I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I did a comparison between up-rezing the slomo footage in After Effects and up-rezzing in Final Cut and didn't really notice too much difference between the two.

Hi Huck,

No, I mean mixing 720p at 40fps vs 30p (not HD) video. Im going to shoot a music video for a local hip hop group. I wanted to shoot the slomo in HD and the rest of the video in 30p dv mode in the p2 camera. Hows that going to cut?

absolutely fine...import your 720p footage (run it through cinema tools - to conform the slomo playback into a 30fps file) use compressor to export it as standard def. and you'll have a perfect slomo file with the same dimensions as your realtime footage.

Thanks Huck! Im not familiar with this kind of workflow I would greatly appreciate it if you can provide me a step by step workflow for this process you're suggesting. Many thanks!
