Mixing 5d and Ex1 - FPS etc

Ok Im still stressing about how to 'standardise' what I do with my cameras

Im in pal land

I have 5d2 which is 30 FPS and has an Awesome look and form factor

I have an EX1 which has great sound and good control of most things

98% of my output will probably be web or corporate DVD etc - these run 30FPS adequately

So I could

-Set them both at 30FPS and just chill with an easy workflow and concentrate on aquiring good content

(risking problems of flickering lights sources and potential nasty retimes of everything should I get a 25FPS requirement)

-I could keep the EX1 on 25FPS and retime my 5d footage

(Making a hellish workflow but a nice standard of 25 FPS and no flicker with at least one camera)

NOW THIS IS MY NEW THOUGHT>> 24 P

-I could set the EX1 on 24 P for that film look straight off the camera and retime the 5d footage

My guess is that beacuse 24 is 0.8 of 30 as opposed to 25 being 0.833333 of 30 that retiming may be quicker and more effective

24 is NTSC compatible nicely (I think) and also moves to 25 (PAL) nicely by the simple undercrank conversion (mildly speeding up)

Of course using 24p also enables me to use the 5d footage at mild slomo 30/24 too

Then Im back in flicker world with both cameras too .. (although for flicker sequences I could shoot 25p EX1 and slow it to 24p)

Please give me your thoughts confused of PAL Land..

30FPS all round is looking bery simple right now !

Also don't forget that the EX1's 30P is probably 29.97 frames per second whereas the 5D Mark II's 30P is an actual 30 frames per second.

The footage will always have to be changed.

I say try the 25fps and convert the 5D Mark II footage.

I will test that ie create a 30FPS FCP timeline and see how they run

The problem with going 25 FPS is that I think I will shoot most footage on the 5d only using the EX1 where the 5d has a problem eg artificial light, challenging sound environment, bright sunlight, also 'steady shot' seems to be handy with the long lens shots (!)

Using compressor the retiming still make the 5d look a bit 'dreamy'

Thanks more please..

I have the following kit and do as follows:
Sony EX1
Canon 5D MII

(Canon XH-A1 and a Sanyo HD1000)

I film events and corporate videos and such.

I use the Sony EX1 for almost everything, I do interviews with my Sony, as well all my shots that require audio recording.
The Sony has proper audio inputs and has auto focus which I need on a steady cam.

The 5D MII comes in for the more detailed work, such as during an interview as a B-camera (close up shots) or for other atmospheric shots. Think about macro stuff, overviews and shots that need shallow DOF.

The Canon XH-A1 is my third back up camera, it still does tape and HDV (so no true 1080p) but its very good in low light and its a very light and versatile camera.

The Sanyo also shoots at 30FPS so I had my fair share of 30FPS experience with that little bugger. It's a hand held CMOS camera, consumer quality, but I use it for quick shots, such as from a skateboard or running around. Its my dummy cam so to speak but gives AWESOME quality in well lit environments.
