mixing 24PA with 30 frame stuff

I've shot some beautiful 24PA interview footage but, now have to cut it against 30 frame ntsc stuff recorded with a VCR. What's the best workflow knowing I want to finish on a DVD. Can I stay 24 frame without making the 30 frame look like crap? Is there a smooth way to turn 30 frame 23.98? Am I forced to capture my 24 PA at 29.97, and never utilize the value of making a DVD from 24 frame source material?

When you taped from TV to VCR you also taped from VCR to DVX right? I suspect what you have is 60i material on your minidv tape right now... Although i might be completely wrong and stupid... Anyway if that is so, you can import your 60i material into your 24fps timeline and interpolate the fields turning each one of the fields into a complete frame just like your 24pa material. Although the resolution will be very lossy considering this is 2nd generation footage from VHS plus you are playing it back one field at a time. Once your 60i is adapted to the timeline you will be able to properly render it as an mpeg2...

Cleanest and easiest if you hadn't already shot your footage would be to shoot it at 24p and then capture edit at 29.97 along with the VCR footage.
unfortunately with 24pa you should go through a 23.98 timeline.
You can stick 60i into the 24 timeline but you're unlikely to have something that looks good.
FCP isn't the best at doing speed conversions. There are some plugins that might help this.
Best bet might be to convert 24 to 29.97 by adding telecine pulldown and then just edit it all in a 29.97. The only way to do this in FCP/Cinema Tools is to dump to tape and then recapture.

I'm in the process of learning FCP 4.5 and shooting at various settings 24p and 24pa. And, I have some footage shot from a dvcpro cam in 29.97 Curious about why it's better to shoot in the 24p rate if I want to also use the 29.97 stuff. Thanks.

Oh hell, i forgot... yes with what i described you will get a slow motion effect only. Sorry i have been thinking about this too long...

Output from the DVX is 29.97.
24pa arrives at that by essentially duplicating a frame every 5 frames.

24p arrives at that by intermixing fields from the frames two times in 5 frames. That's the 2:3 pulldown that's been added. This method for 24p is the same as when film is transferred to video. This provides the 24 fps look but in the smoothest manner to play at normal video rate (29.97) That's what makes 24p better for intercutting with 60i material. They go on the same sequence since 24p doesn't have to be converted back into pure 23.98 (It can be converted but it doesn't have to be)

24pa though is designed to be converted to 23.98. It's not layed down to look good at 29.97, it's designed to be easy and fast to convert to 23.98. It can also provide slightly better quality since it doesn't have to recompress every 4th frame as it removes pulldown.
