mixing 24 with 30fps

last night i shot a benifit concert in 30fps on my dvx, i had a camera operator on the sony hdr-fx1 (on SD with a miniDV tape) and a 3rd person with a sony hdr-sr1 (small one chip c-mos censor hd cam, shooting at SD also)

i made the last minute decision to not shoot in 24fps with the DVX100B. I want all the footage to be in 24fps, which i can do in post, but i figured mixing the two different frame rate would totally screw me up in post. was this a wise choice? has anybody ever worked with these conditions? i'd love to see how it turned out.

Was it 30p, or was it 60i (which is commonly referred to as "29.97," though it ought not to be)?

If it's 30p, you're pretty much stuck editing and exporting as 60i, because that's the only format which isn't going to make your footage look bad. 30p and 24p do NOT convert well to each other -- there's just not enough difference in motion samples between them.

If it's 60i footage, then you can convert it to 24p. Two things -- you'll lose some vertical resolution by doing it (it can't be helped), and if you have quick pans, zooms, etc., they may look fine in 60i, but not so much once converted to 24p.

damn... well, i guess my only option might to be keeping it looking like video... which sucks, but whatever, it's a learning curve. thanks for the info david!

You can shoot 60i with the intent of converting it to 24p, but you have to be aware of what you're doing. You have to handle the camera as though you're shooting 24p all along.
