Mixed Reality the next trend in virtual reality

Agreed. A total fad. Mixed Reality is even more niche than VR. At least with VR there are very obvious applications - games, instructional videos, sales videos, education etc. But it's even more limited IMHO than 3D - and I always thought 3D would at best be a small part of the market in narrative films... I never bought that 3D would replace 2D - it's a different animal altogether, not like going from B&W to Color, it's more like going from painting to sculpture, except we have very little track record in 3D and a lot in sculpture to refer to. 3D is just starting out with its own artistic language, it can't just be an "effect" you tack onto a movie the way it is today, if 3D is to thrive, it must establish its own artistic language. Meanwhile I honestly don't believe VR has even a place in narrative filmmaking, period. And Mixed Reality even less. It's a niche within a niche. Funny to see all that cash dumped into it by seemingly clever venture capital and smart money - I predict a big fail, another tulip bulb moment. I guess we'll see!

I don't think this is aimed at narrative film making. It's aimed at replacing your phone or computer screen.
they are not trying to make a tool you can use to make the next Star Wars. They are making the tools you see IN Star Wars. Remember the briefing before the attack on the Death Star with the big transparent floating Death Star in the middle of the room? They are working on making that everyday reality. It will probably be architectural drawings or engineering schematics not a Death Star but you get the idea.

Yeah, the goal of this is to replace every screen you own with just this. You won't need a TV, one or several will just be projected onto the wall or whatever surface you want. You won't have to look at a cell phone screen, it will just be projected in front of you. It's going to take time, but once the display tech gets to like, the size of a contact lens, it will be everywhere. This short film can show you the potential of it--

So mixed reality is just their name for augmented reality?
Personally I think augmented reality will be way more popular and useful than virtual reality.
I have no doubt that within the next 20 years we'll be replacing our tiny smartphone and TV screens with AR glasses the size of eyeglasses that can double as regular eyeglasses and/or sunglasses. We may still have the smartphone in the pocket to do the heavy computing the way we had/have tower computers under the desk hooked to monitors on the desk. But eventually we'll get something like the iMac where there doesn't need to be anything in your pocket, it will all be integrated into the frame (or even lenses) of the glasses.

This technology is going to be so incredibly useful. I can think of a hundred uses for it just off the top of my head.
Looking into walls of buildings to see where the pipes and electrical conduits are located.
Walking around the forest and identifying which berries are poisonous and which are safe to eat just by looking at them.
Hunting aliens in the woods by your house with your friends and some blasters.
Figuring out where that component is located in your car engine just by looking at your car engine and having it light up that part.

Someone might figure out a way to tell stories with it. But those stories would need to be unchained from any particular location so that they can play out anywhere. So more like a bunch of actors on a street playing out a scene. Nothing that will replace traditional movies. But 3D movies will be easier to watch since you're already wearing the glasses.
